The Only Noise Lyrics
it's not perfect but it's
from the first take it's the
one that i did with you here
it seems careless that i
shouldn't care less but it's
the only noise i have of yours
i'm so tired because
you'd been so fired up and
there was no keeping up with you
it's no triumph i knew i was for the high jump but i
delighted in my best mistake
i only thought of me
i only thought of me
and now you're all i see
now you're all i see
reading backwards i see
where the attack was which in
real time came out of the blue
it's a weakness that i
love this bleakness over any constant happiness
shake me out of this
take me out of this
carry me with love
bury me in love
from the first take it's the
one that i did with you here
shouldn't care less but it's
the only noise i have of yours
you'd been so fired up and
there was no keeping up with you
delighted in my best mistake
i only thought of me
and now you're all i see
now you're all i see
where the attack was which in
real time came out of the blue
love this bleakness over any constant happiness
take me out of this
carry me with love
bury me in love

Maybe, it's about a guy who loves a woman and becomes obsessed with her ("i only thought of me and now you're all i see") though he knew that he shouldn't ("delighted in my best mistake"). He doesn't want to love her ("shake me out of this take me out of this") but he can't help it. Anyone else got any opinions?

Well...I think it is about another woman. "I only thought of me..." and it fits with a certain theme of cheating in all of his work. I think he confims this in "it seems careless that I shouldn't care less". A nice play on words, as well. And, a final admission in the second to last verse that "it's a weakness that i love this bleakness over any constant happiness"
Can anyone tell me what album I can find this on?
This song is in the Eyes Open Deluxe Edition, found on iTunes.
Could it be about Mark McClelland's departure from the band?
I think it's about a guy who was in solid relationship, but felt claustrophobic or needed to be independent, or something of that nature, so he ended it. He did so completely suddenly "reading backwards i see/ where the attack was which in/real time came out of the blue". Perhaps it was a rash decision due to a change in life circumstances. Whatever the reason, he's realized his mistake as well as how much he hurt his girl and how he still loves her. Maybe he'd even deluded himself into thinking that this decision was good for her, and what she needed. Either way, he just wants her back.
I made a comment over on the page for "On/Off" that also rings true for this song (or at least IMO anyway).
Here's a bit: "Yea he really does sound like a compulsive cheater here. I've never cheated on anyone, but I know what it's like to sabotage a great relationship because of something stupid and selfish. It's like whenever you find someone that makes you happy, your subconscious sets out to be a complete dick to them. And strangely, if you do it enough, you start to feel less remorse and more annoyance that the person doesn't just leave you already."
This sentiment is especially echoed here in the line, "It's a weakness that I love this bleakness over any constant happiness."
