Supermassive Black Hole Lyrics
I've liked this song for a while but only feel compelled to post about the meaning now because it totally applies to my life haha.
The first verse is setting the listener up for the situation. The speaker of the song, I'll just name him as Matt, met a woman under the said "false pretenses." She promised him more than he was going to get and he definitely wants more from her. He can't seem to get over her. Then, he goes onto say "you set my soul alight" which is pretty obvious in meaning.
A glacier melting in the dead of night/superstar getting sucked into a supermassive black hole are both actions where a victim is undergoing inevitable circumstances. The glacier is melting, reserves are melting, lines are getting blurred, inhibitions drop. The superstar getting sucked into the supermassive black hole represents Matt getting sucked in by this girl. She's the black hole; nothing can escape her, not even light.
The second verse is calling her superficial, saying he's a fool for her. He knows she's no good for him, but he still gets sucked in by her, hoping that on day the truth will come out and that she'll honestly want him.
I hope this helped. :)
bingo! i was hoping to find an interpretation like yours, through all the comments :) couldn't agree with you more... Matt is the superstar (irl), getting sucked into a supermassive blackhole (that is the lusty charms of an average woman)

Twilight fanatics (no offence :P): just so you know, Muse didn't write this song for Twilight. Although I like the series myself, I agree with some of the points the Muse-fans-who-hate-Twilight have put forth.
This song is about the music industry... how many artists sell their souls to it and they really love it and can't escape from it even if they want... Music Industry=SupermassiveBlackHole And if you see the video and if you have some knowledge about symbologies you'll notice a lot of them there and this can make sense because this song is on the BHAR album and they talk about that stuff in this album and also because Muse decided to put this song on a totally commercial movie such as Twilight...
This song is about SEX! "Glaciers melting in the dead of night" = large activity at night time, "And the superstar sucked into the supermasssive"= superstar: PENIS - Supermassive: Vagina.
done!
OMG you made my day. That was hilarious!

This song is Supermassive.
The title refers to an ass. A huge ass. Only kidding.
LOL!

I love this song, but when I read your comment, I almost fell of my chair laughing.

Why do I actually share the same opinion? =D

To start off, I'd like to say that, well, a song isn't really a song unless it can be interpreted in more than one way, depending on the listener. This isn't at all a bad song; it's just less opinionated than most other Muse songs, and it's catchy, somewhat repititive nature has likened it to the shallow pop-music so common on our radios nowadays. It refers to a relationship based on appearances ("queen of the superficial"), held by curiosity (as in, he is attracted to the mystery, knowing that there is more than what meets the eye). He discovers more about this person all the time, melting away her pretences ("glaciers melting in the dead of night"), as if she were something of an ice-queen. He believes she holds the upper-hand, because she knows he's not going anywhere as long as he is held by mystery. *Note: Most Muse songs seem to be about this selfish, victimized sort of relationship.
First comment :D
Well... this song is an... interesting new approach for Muse. I HATED it the first time I listened to it, but now I actually think it\'s alright.
My interpretation is that it\'s about a guy who falls in love with a celebrity, or a \"superstar\", and thinks this person is amazing, then the superstar leaves this person, and the person left alone wishes them to either feel the pain they feel, get physically hurt, or die, as evendenced by the \"Supermassive black hole\" metaphor.
Of course, I could be totally off. Oh well.
This song is older than the movie though. Could of course be about the book, but I'm guessing it's not and that the movie simply used the song because they found it fitting.

yeah, smeyer likes muse so they used this song for twilight but in no way did muse write in because of the books or movie. check your timeline, D.B. is right.

Sorry, but I can't stand people who only like something because it was in a fan girl movie like Twilight. Muse are one of the best bands on the planet, and deserve more respect than to have teenage fan girls lust over them because a song was in Twilight.

Muse\'s dark edge is still sharp and shiny!
Unfortunately this chap has found himself attracted to the epitome of superficiality. She\'s sucked him in, not unlike, say, a black hole, towards an existence as worthwile as oblivion. Whether she is a superficial \'superstar\', or he is in fact the \'superstar\' being sucked into her \'supermassive black hole\', he originally thought that she was warming him up, but has now noticed that she is actually melting things.
i\'ve got nothing to say about the meaning but this song makes me want to dance so badly. i love it =]
