Hospital Beds Lyrics

There's nothing to do here
Some just whine and complain
In bed at the hospital

Coming and going
Asleep and awake
In bed at the hospital

Tell me the story
Of how you ended up here
I've heard it all in the hospital

Nurses are fussin'
Doctors on tour
Somewhere in India

I got one friend
Laying across form me
I did not choose him
He did not choose me

We got no chance of recovery
Sharing hospital Joy and misery,
The Joy and misery

Put out the fire, boys
Don't stop, don't stop
Put out the fire on us

Put out the fire, boys
Don't stop, don't stop
Put out the fire on us

Bring the buckets by the dozens
Bring your nieces and your cousins
Come, put out the fire on us

Vietnam fishing trips
Italian opera
Vietnam fishing trips
Italian opera

I got one friend
Laying across from me
I did not choose him
He did not choose me

We got no chance of recovery
Sharing hospital joy and misery
, the joy and misery
The joy, the joy, the joy, misery

Put out the fire, boys
Don't stop, don't stop
Put out the fire on us

Put out the fire, boys
Don't stop, don't stop
Put out the fire on us

Bring the buckets by the dozens
Bring your nieces and your cousins
Come, put out the fire on us

They are really quite amazing-- wonderful people making intensely gorgeous music...

Some corrections to the lyrics, though: (3rd line) in bed in the hospital = in bed AT the hospital Nothing's Sufficing = Nurses are fussin joy and hospital = Sharing hospital We are now fish and chips = Vietnam Fishing Trips

with the fishing lines, it sounds different each time i listen to it! first i heard he and i, fish and chips, then Vietnam fishing trips, now we are now, fishing chips!!! i have now idea!

It's about rehabilitation. Personal rehabilitation (literal) and social rehabilitation. "There's nothing to do here/ some just whine and complain" -- behavioral health wards. "we've got no chance of recovery" -- falsity of prescription happiness.

It serves as an allegory for the drastic change our society must make. We must rehabilitate ourselves, save ourselves, not only from self-damage, but that which we inflict upon others. "put out the fire on us"

"Vietnam Fishing Trips" -- dichotomizes the horrors of war and the benefits; the economic and political power reaped from despoiling others. Also, a reference to surfing, other recreation, during the Vietnam War? After My Lai, the 11th Light Infantry went surfing...

this song reminds me of catch 22. yossarian's time in the hospital.

I 100% agree. Pretty sure Catch-22 had some strong influence in the writing of this song.

The way i took the song (while watching the video) was (There's nothing to do here, some just whine and compliain = two boys living on a farm with nothing to do with themselves.) (nurses are fussing = mothers complaining the two boys being too rowdy) (Doctors on tour = fathers not home, maybe for work reasons or going to the bar.) In the video it shows that the one of the boys' had a crush on a girl, only to find his best friend kissing her, and the betrayed friend angrily walks away, and flashes forward to the two boys, that are now men and both are pro boxers. (I've got one friend laying across from me = the two men are now sitting in the corners arcoss from each other in the boxing ring) (I did not chose him, he did not chose me =that they didn't chose to fight one another.) (We've got no chance of recovery = their friendship can not be mended because of what happened when they were younger.) (joy and misery = their are happy to see each other, but miserable that they know their friendship can not be saved.) (put out the fire on us = someone calm the hate for one another) (bring your nieces and your cousins = bring your family to watch the fight?) In the video, a woman walks in with her two children, and she turns out to be the girl from the beginning that ruined the boys' friendship, whom had kids with the best friend. Again, that's what i thought the song was about while watching the music video, a reference to the past of both the boxers.

@Yankee202 I agree with your interpretation. I think that "bring your nieces bring your cousins" = they ( the two men) want help to save themselves and their friendship from failing. They are willing to seek help from anyone in order to do this.

Vietnam, fishing trips, Italian opera = The three top conversations he has or hears. he says "ive heard it all in the hospital", this is also a refrence, meaning nothing ever differn't happens in the hospital. he's just got to put up with there being nothing to do in the hospital. He is an observer, anyone who has experiance being in the hospital for long periods of time can deffenitly relate to the lyrics, " Joy and misery "

" put out the fire on us " = end it, the hole experiance, coming and going, at day or night, its !boring and tiering! Even his opening line is " There's nothing to do here So just whine and complain".

I never really thought this song had a deeper meaning than two men in a hospital room who find connections, as Nathan said it was about, but today I found my own meaning in it. We were discussing the type of characters that Ernest Hemingway created and how they were always depressed. My teacher was talking about how a lot of people always say "well, why are they so depressing? All they do is sit around and whine" and then she explained that maybe these people just needed another person to be depressed with. They needed someone to complain to and they needed someone who was in a bad place, too, so they could be understood. And out of nowhere, I thought of this song and how these men in a hospital were metaphors or people who weren't emotionally well, and because they are both in a bad condition, they stick together because they needed somebody else. They didn't need someone to make them happy, they just needed someone who would understand them.
