Atrophy Lyrics

Don't tell me this is your last chance to change
Cause if you do, then you would be telling a lie but

I warned you
What could happen if you should decide
To live your life from 9 to 5
And I mourn you
For the detail that is left unsaid
Is a reminder of the time you bled

Return to days when you knew you still felt alive
Reveal the way you felt when you could look inside

They sold you
Everything you need to fix you up
And you feel good now but you can't wake up
They found a way to reassure you
That everything would be okay
Reach out today now I implore you to remember who you are

So you felt it, but you don't know
Why you can't explain at all
Why you felt it, cause you don't know
No you don't know

Break the walls between building atrophy
Causing all your problems to recede
Break the walls between
Causing all your pain
You'll never learn

Take back
The beat in your heart
Why fight
When you can't be bought

To heckyeahitsanna: I have a similar interpretation to this song as alhora in that I think this song is about not letting society tell you who to be. What I think this line means is that you just need to listen to your heart in who you want to be and that you don't need to fight who society is telling you to be because if you listen to your heart society has no control over you. That's my best guess at least. Anyone else can give me their opinion.

I agree that this song has to do with conformity. (As an aside, I find that often those who speak most loudly against conformity are those most guilty of it - they just don't conform to "normal" society.)

As for heckyeahitsanna's question about the last lines: I'd say "Take back the beat in your heart" is pretty obvious - your heart shouldn't be beating for other people, to make other people like you; it should be beating for you. "Why fight when you can't be bought" is a little more tricky.

Perhaps it's commentary on what I spoke of earlier of those who speak against conformity being guilty of it themselves. If you truly cannot be bought (i.e. you truly don't conform), there's no reason to fight against conformity and scream about how stupid it is because it's not an issue for you.

I think Ronnie's singing this song to someone who has been absorbed by the hustle and bustle of working in 21st century post-industrial society and has forgotten how to be him or her self.

Oxymoron of the day:

BUILDING ATROPHY

(atrophy: n. a wasting away, deterioration, or diminution, etc.) lol

Oh, and I always thought it was "Why fight when you CAN be bought" ??? But yet, people can't really be bought... but why wouldn't you fight if you couldn't be bought???

idk, love this song, and RJA, but I'll think about the meaning later.

-peace-

It talks about somebody you know that has been changed in a bad way to try to fit into popularity, even if it means to fall into peer pressure of drug usage. However, what you really wanted was this somebody to be just himself/herself.

Now to you, you see this somebody as being dead in a sense that they are not the person they used to be. This person has completely changed.

In addition, this person is now facing problems and can't explain all the problems.

The "9 to 5" part has nothing to do with taking medicine, it's about working a dead end job. It's about someone who stopped pursuing their dreams and is depressed, worn out, and is talked about in the second verse. The "Is a reminder of the time you bled" is not about cutting yourself and watching blood pour from your body, it is someone telling that person to remember the days when he/she believed in their goals, and did everything they could to accomplish them.

Wow.. honestly I guess you could take this song a couple ways... but it just reminds me of personal experiences...

Like being so numb that you dont remember anything, you dont remember living or feeling or even breathing... You fall into the routine of whats expected of you. "I warned you what could happen if you should decide to live your life from 9 to 5" to me that says the daily faking of happiness, you do what's expected, no more no less, you cant let them see you mess up.

"and I mourn you for the detail that is left unsaid is a reminder of the time you bled return to days when you knew you still felt alive " That reminds me of when I used to do some stupid shit... You never told anyone about it.. it was between you and the razor, you bled to remind you that it was real, and that you were in fact alive.

"they sold you everything you need to fix you up and you feel good now but you can't wake up they found a way to reassure you that everything would be okay" That reminds me of medication and whatnot... They sell you what you need to be "fixed" in their eyes, and you do feel good I guess, but its like it's all fake, you're dreaming constantly, more numb then the way you were before, you just dont realize as many bad things,, they make you feel like everythings okay even though you know its not..

"So you felt it, but you dont know, why you can't explain at all why you felt it cuz you dont know, no you dont know" Being so numb that you know you felt something, you know you did something, yet you have no idea why.... Like you remember doing something so vividly, yet at the same time you cant remember if you actually did it or not...

but thats just my personal relation to this song.... I love RJA

took the words right out of my mouth. It could not have been said better. love them too
