WP Lyrics

Slap me Daft, we sat down in the back of the class
To seize knowledge we don't need, I forgot my late pass
But I'm early to a arival beatbox, you got raps?
Meet me on the football field, don't sleep on field, the quarterback
No one clapped when we locked in, it was removal of our class
But my flag got captured and I fell between the cracks
My tool for inspiration turned into a handicap
No matter how I tried, I just couldn't fill the gaps
Those whipper snappers, they got trapped old chap
They lost the way, they never had the right map
Needed a sneak attack to slap the demons off my back
So I packed for the schddle dreamed big I wouldn't settle
Put the pedal to the metal and returned to fundamentals
I'll never forget running through the hall with all y'all rebels
Roaming through the high land, young bucks invincible
Echoes in my brain, if kids report to the principle
Substance dulls the mind
Traife wine clouds the heart
You can't sew a stitch with one hand
While you're taking it apart
Bright lights might look nice
But they sure won't make you sharp
You can't sew a stitch with one hand
While you're taking it apart

Yeah, misty morning and my mum's a mess
To make matters worse dog my pops is stressed
Life is a test, make the grade or catch an F
Now death is all that's left to ponder
I wander off hoping to catch my breath

Yeah, misty morning and my mum's a mess
To make matters worse dog my pops is stressed
Life is a test, make the grade or catch an F
Now death is all that's left to ponder
I wander off hoping to catch my breath
And hold it, mold my memories from untold scripts
And roll up in a tornado twist, now I'm certain
There's a pertinent reason I'm on this earth
Seasons change in white plains, but we remain alert
When new school years appear, fools fear for a failure
And crawl away in tears
I play Popeye the Sailor and stay with spinach
We walk the halls with a grimace
Yeah they gossip in groups
I try to mind my business and tell the truth
For instance, I listen, see it all with basketball court vision
Ignoring ignorance in fields of fiction
We lean back in the calmest position
And embrace the honesty found within our tension

What's good?

Substance dulls the mind
Traife wine clouds the heart
You can't sew a stitch with one hand
While you're taking it apart
Bright lights make you blind
But they sure don't leave you sharp
You can't sew a stitch with one hand
While you're taking it apart

Trapped in the elevator of your mind
Is it real, what will you find behind the door
Your imaginations put you in a bind
Around you there's a cloud of gloom
Swallow the key, lock yourself in a room
Can't see outside of your Universe

No more war, there won't be anymore hunger
No jealousy, not even competition

Let go, release, you hold the keys
Time we evaporate into the breeze
We are nothing, we are something
Let go, release, you hold the keys
It's time we evaporate into the breeze
We are nothing, we'll be something
Welcome to the desert of my soul
You can stay if you like
There's room for one more
There's room for one more

This song to me sounds like reflection and guidance. A few thoughts on some of the lyrics:

"My tool for inspiration turned into a handicap" I think this is about marijuana, and I relate to it because weed can be like that. You think you need it for (x) art, enjoyment, relaxation, etc... but it can become a handicap ... for example if you need to be stoned to enjoy anything.

Also I have always loved this lyrics in the chorus: "Substance dulls the mind Traife wine clouds the heart You can't sew a stitch with one hand While you're taking it apart"

I have felt a gravitational pull towards that lyric since I was in my late teens and abusing marijuana and other substances. How beautiful and concise though, and true. You can't sew a stitch with one hand while you're taking it apart.

Alcohol and cannabis and substances can trick you into thinking you need them. If you wind up abusing them like me, they can pull the string apart of your life. You can't fix the problem until you take a step back and perhaps shelf the substances. Thanks Matisyahu for a great tune.

YAY!!! i was born in white plains...don't see what it has to do with this song...hm...all i really remember is ticks and miserable weather, o well, wat's it about anyway?

first line is slap me dap not daft

to me it sounds like a story of growing up in White plains and how alcohol and substances weakened him and those around him and just reflecting on his time growing up and reminiscing over old times.

So, I've listen to this song multiple times. To me one of the best songs on the Youth album. I think it's about over coming your own demons by finding God. But it's not merely finding God, but also letting go of your ego and allowing God in. Yeah, I would say it's religious. For example:

"Trapped in the elevator of your mind Is it real, what will you find behind the door Your imaginations put you in a bind Around you there's a cloud of gloom" Being stuck with all the problems in your mind, even ones that aren't even real, you've created them. Finding no way out, you start to go into a deep depression.

"Swallow the key, lock yourself in a room Can't see outside of your Universe" This is the part where your ego, with this false image of you are suppose to be, keeps you from seeing and accepting your true self. From accepting God.

"No more war, there won't be anymore hunger No jealousy, not even competition" Jokingly, I always say "this is communist propaganda". But what I really think this part is about, is finding inner peace. Not constantly fighting with yourself.

"Let go, release, you hold the keys Time we evaporate into the breeze We are nothing, we are something Let go, release, you hold the keys It's time we evaporate into the breeze We are nothing, we'll be something"

To me, this part is finally coming to accept that ones ego has to be let go of in order to find that inner peace. But you're the one who has to let go of it. You have to allow it to "evaporate into the breeze". And while ones ego may claim to be a true identity, the reality is that it's nothing, just created and masking the real you.

"Welcome to the desert of my soul You can stay if you like There's room for one more There's room for one more" This one makes me think of Psalm 63:1.

That's my opinion. And due to the fact that Matisyahu is a religious person, I feel this might be close to the original meaning. Love to hear what others think.
