I Got Stripes Lyrics
On a monday,
I was arrested (uh huh)
On a tuesday,
They locked me in the jail (oh boy)
On a wednesday,
My trial was attested
On a thursday,
They said guilty and
the Judge's gavel fell
I got stripes,
Stripes around my shoulders
I got chains,
Chains around my feet
I got stripes,
Stripes around my shoulders
And them chains, them chains,
They're about to drag me down
On a monday,
My momma come to see me
On a tuesday,
They caught me with a file
On a wednesday,
I'm down in solitary
On a thursday,
I start on bread and water for a while
I got stripes,
Stripes around my shoulders
I got chains,
Chains around my feet
I got stripes,
Stripes around my shoulders
And them chains, them chains,
They're about to drag me down
I got stripes,
Stripes around my shoulders
I got chains,
Chains around my feet
I got stripes,
Stripes around my shoulders
And them chains, them chains,
They're about to drag me down
I was arrested (uh huh)
On a tuesday,
They locked me in the jail (oh boy)
On a wednesday,
My trial was attested
On a thursday,
They said guilty and
the Judge's gavel fell
Stripes around my shoulders
I got chains,
Chains around my feet
I got stripes,
Stripes around my shoulders
And them chains, them chains,
They're about to drag me down
My momma come to see me
On a tuesday,
They caught me with a file
On a wednesday,
I'm down in solitary
On a thursday,

I got chains,

I got stripes,

And them chains, them chains,

Stripes around my shoulders
I got chains,

I got stripes,
Stripes around my shoulders
And them chains, them chains,
They're about to drag me down

Love it! Love Johnny Cash! I get so much stick from my mates for liking Johnny Cash, but he is so immensely amazing and no one is going to change my opinion!
This song is based on Leadbelly's song, On Monday. The opening lyrics follow it exactly, the rest have similar lines. Cash made it better as far as I am concerned. If you don't know Leadbelly, do yourself a favor and find out about him. Nirvana did a cover of his song: Where Did You Sleep Last Night. Leadbelly's music has influenced countless bands and songs. Leadbelly died in the late 1940's.
Never knew about Leadbelly before, gonnae give him a listen. Hes obviously well respected if Johnny Cash and Nirvana have covered his songs. This songs great, really catchy. Pretty simple lyrics about going to jail. Typical of Johnny Cash to sing a song like this. Bloody amazing song though, dont know why more people havent commented.
Don't worry Hamathy coz I won't.
Love him too! His music! The way he sings.Even his compositions, imple but awesome.
This song was written by a man named Joe, he sold full rights to Johnny Cash. Joe was a guitarist who played with Hank Williams, Sr, and Merle Haggard. Joe also wrote Nobody’s Home after his wife died, and sold the full rights to that song to Clint Black.
