April; the cruelest month
I reckon this much could be a contender
There's only so much sorrow a man can take
I can't change my face, Don't you remember?
You know when I was on the road
That me and you was on the rocks, so low
Should never have got talkin' all that jive
Now there's only one way for me to stay alive
Drivin' in my Puegeot ay-ay-ay-ay
Twenty inch rims with the chrome now ay-ay-ay-ay
Blazin' out Yo La Tengo ay-ay-ay-ay
Drivin' round poppin' with the top down ay-ay-ay-ay (2x)
So long to contentedness
I reckon next time I'll march in favor
So long I've felt a blessedness
No more is this a taste I want to savor
Know how I dig you on?
You now only see, so far
But never was there more to say
Less, to do, before, turn away
Drivin' in my Puegeot ay-ay-ay-ay
Twenty inch rims with the chrome now ay-ay-ay-ay
Blazin' out Yo La Tengo ay-ay-ay-ay
Drivin' round poppin' with the top down ay-ay-ay-ay (2x)
I reckon this much could be a contender
There's only so much sorrow a man can take
I can't change my face, Don't you remember?
That me and you was on the rocks, so low
Should never have got talkin' all that jive
Now there's only one way for me to stay alive
Twenty inch rims with the chrome now ay-ay-ay-ay
Blazin' out Yo La Tengo ay-ay-ay-ay
Drivin' round poppin' with the top down ay-ay-ay-ay (2x)
I reckon next time I'll march in favor
So long I've felt a blessedness
No more is this a taste I want to savor
You now only see, so far
But never was there more to say
Less, to do, before, turn away
Twenty inch rims with the chrome now ay-ay-ay-ay
Blazin' out Yo La Tengo ay-ay-ay-ay
Drivin' round poppin' with the top down ay-ay-ay-ay (2x)

It's not a very strong link but maybe this song about having an amzing girlfriend and treating her badly... The title 'playboy' could imply cheating or something. 'When I was on the road...me and you on the rocks' Implies perhaps touring and leaving a girl behind or even just a friend? The 3rd verse implies being liked by someone you no longer want. Brilliant song. Just Brilliant.
yknow, i love this song. i always think the songs about someone being left behind by the 'playboy' who sings the chorus. i think the first words are 'have you the cruelest...' the music also is excellent.
the lyrics are so deep and mournful but the melody and beat is so...how do I put this...gangster! I love it.
I think it's about the end of a relationship and the way of coping...driving with a Peugeot and blazin' out Yo La Tengo...god, they're such nerds... :-)
I always thought "drivin' round poppin' with the top down" was "drivin 'round Pompey with the top down," Pompey being another name for Portsmouth, England.
this is the coolest song everr
The Lyrics are: April, the cruelest month I reckon this March could be a contender
This fits much better when followed by "There's only so much sorrow a man can take"
The fact that April-March(Almost a full year) can be cruel and there's only so much sorrow you can take. e.g. A whole year of sorrow "I reckon this much could be a contender" just doesn't make sense to me at all.
ALSO: "Know how I dig you on?" SHOULD BE: "I know how I did you wrong." It fits with the preceeding line: No more is this a taste I want to savor. He's feeling regret and he wants to stop being a playboy. He knows he treated someone like crap.
this song seems to poke fun at American top 40s culture which seems to be so saturated in materialism. but that is just a thought
This song is SO GANGSTA YO.
Seriously I believe it's their take on Justin Timberlake/R&B/hip-hop. In an ironic fashion. The lyrics are hilarious, come on.
DRIVING IN MY BLINGED-OUT PEUGEOT, BLAZING OUT YO LA TENGO omg we so hardcore!!!!!11
I LOVE this song. I love the irony of how its making fun of being 'gangsta' but it becomes an amazing song. The synth line is literally addictive. I could listen all day. Oh Hot Chip <3
