Daysleeper Lyrics
Haven’t seemed haven’t seen happy it’s gonna come to me
When it does
I don’t know where I’ll keep it at all
In my room where I sleep to keep away bad dreams
In my heart, I don’t know
Loneliness takes up all that space
So when I’m feeling low I’ll take out my check book and buy a new car
Oh that sweet distraction, that comfortable discontent, I’m in love
Andrea's in the room kicking her shoes off
Sing along, singing along
Shaking our blues off we sing
I’ve come up with a plan so brilliant
Like Times Square, mid-day
Thoughts are directed in every way
And so I’ll keep my eyes on the billboard ads displayed
Kill my heart, no fix it up
Oh those sweet distractions, inviting discontent, I’m in love
When it does
I don’t know where I’ll keep it at all
In my room where I sleep to keep away bad dreams
In my heart, I don’t know
Loneliness takes up all that space
Oh that sweet distraction, that comfortable discontent, I’m in love
Sing along, singing along
Shaking our blues off we sing
I’ve come up with a plan so brilliant
Like Times Square, mid-day
Thoughts are directed in every way
Kill my heart, no fix it up
Oh those sweet distractions, inviting discontent, I’m in love

I agree with ambero444. I don't think it has anything to do with a relationship. rather, it sounds like he's incredibly lonely, hence incredibly unhappy. he seems to cope with this by trying to fill his empty heart with material objects and convincing himself that he's found 'love' in them. as for "andrea", misery loves company. it's like, they're both in the same boat, so they keep each other company, maybe have loveless relations.
this song is about being in love and they dont feel the same way back so you need "those sweet distractions" to keep your mind off whoever you love.
I disagree in that I don't think it's necessarily about unrequited love. I think "those sweet distractions" could be distracting him from all sorts of things that life can throw at you. I think he also knows that even though those things can distract him for a while, his underlining problems will still be there.
He's in a lonely, depressing relationship. Neither of them seem to be happy. Andrea is in the room kicking her shoes off and singing. And the both sing. " Shaking our blues off we sing. "
Instead of getting to their problems, he invites the sweet distractions to avoid them.
He also says that he's come up with a brilliant plan. Then he starts talking about keeping his eyes on the billboard ads. Maybe he means, that they should take a break, he should go on the road for a while.
Kill my heart, No- fix it up could mean that he either wants to fix their relationship, or break up and try to get over the pain.
Andrea is Joel's wife. the guy who started the band with Ian back when they were just Vera Nor Velma. Joel was also the primary song writer, guitar, keys, and back up vocals up until after their debut release as DATH.

Joel and Ian would normally play their songs and just make lyrics up as they went along. While they did this song, they were at Joel's and they sang that Andrea (his wife) was kicking her shoes off.

I don't think this has anything to do with a relationship. The way I see it is some what similar to newchangeof pace, it's about dealing with life and using material objects to fill the void of loneliness . And Andrea doesn't have to be his girlfriend, she could easily just be a friend of his.
i hate to be the out-of-the-loop guy, but when/on what was this song released? i've never heard of it.
It was on one of the two demos they recorded before releasing Small Steps, Heavy Hooves. E-mail me and I can hook you up with both of them. My address is my screen name here @gmail.com

Does anyone know what the girl is saying in the middle of the song? All I can hear is "in the month of july"
Sounds like a vampire. Its called Daysleeper. Duh.
Ok. I think I should elaborate. pretty much any novel about vampires I have read (and I have read a lot) the vampire is usually lonely, rich, and they get obsessed (for lack of a better term) with human things like cars and experiences (times square).
