Dirty Lyrics

[Verse 1]
All of my life I've tried to be like the man in the pictures with outstretched hands
Wearing purple around his neck and he's saying words that I can't forget

[Pre-Chorus]
Won't you tell me just who made you
Judge and ruler over me?
Little girl, can you tell just who made you
So very God damned holy?

[Chorus]
Cause I tried to be the best I could
And I did the best my frail mind could

I'd trade it all just for one touch
I'd give it all to be enough
To make things new, yeah
To make things new

[Verse 2]
Cause one in a million is all the same
I've taken aspirin for my pain
Empty bottles just seem to say
I cannot make this go away

[Pre-Chorus]
Hey you, tell me just who made this
Judge and ruler over me
I can tell what I want just to make it
So very goddamn holy

[Chorus]
Cause I tried to be the best I could
And I did the best my frail mind could
I'd trade it all just for one touch
I'd give it all to be enough
To make things new, yeah
To make things new, yeah
Inside so I could be like...

I'd trade it all just for one touch
I'd give it all to be it

[Chorus]
Cause I did the best a boy could do
And I did the best my frail mind could
I'd trade it all just for one touch
I'd give it all to be enough
To make things new inside
To make things new
So I could be like you

[Outro]
I tried so hard to make things
New

when the lead singer of hurt was growing up he listined to classical \ christian music and i think this song is about him being pressured to be holy and clean like the lord and hes saying hes not cause hes too dirty

honestly all together in really short and simple terms i think he traded his religion for some girl and the girl ended up betraying him and telling him that hes no good and all that kinda stuff.

he's pissed off at jesus for taking his baby and he blames god for what happend even though she killed it,and no matter how many drugs he takes the pain won't go away and he wants to rewind what happend but he can't,when he is talking about how "he did the best he could" he means as a father while his baby was alive. if you guys read up on "hurt you would find that he lost his baby and that's what this album is about, well and his ex.

Great song many different meanings. I think it is about how holy some people act just because they go to church. They may be horrible people but they still at rightous and think they are "god's gift" so to speak

i agree that its about a girl and religion. i believe j is talking about how he was christian and believed in god, then he meets this woman and is happy, theres rumors about how his son was killed by his wife and if this is true, this song could be saying how he believed that people are good and with this happening to him he believes that everyone is the same. the woman he thought was pure and everything great in his life, has become just like everyone else that has hurt him ('Cause one n a million is all the same). This is when J becomes depressed

i fell in love with hurt's tainted grasp on religion. "The Rapture" shows this kind of angst against organized religion. Does anyone get a somewhat unpure feeling when the singer sings of the man in purple? Who is the little girl? Part of me wants to think that this is tied in with "The Rapture" and that the little girl is devout and faithful and because of her faith and the speaker's inadequacies in that area, they can never be.

Lots of good ideas on interpretations of this song. I think a lot of them are spot on, although everyone will interpret it differently. I personally agree with NJCollins and TheRockGoddess915 the most. "I'd trade it all just for one touch, I'd give it all to be enough" are some of the most powerful words of this song, my idea of these words is his one touch was his son, if he could just hold him as a father should. He finds himself wishing he was more, that he was more capable so he may have saved his son. Very powerful and moving son, Hurt is one of the deepest and most lyrically intelligent bands I know of.
