Everything Put Together Falls Apart Lyrics
Paraphernalia
Never hides your broken bones
And I don’t know why
You want to try
It’s plain to see you’re on your own
Oh, I ain’t blind, no
Some folks are crazy
Others walk that borderline
Watch what you’re doing
Taking downs to get off to sleep
And ups to start you on your way
After a while they’ll change your style
I see it happening every day
Oh spare your heart
Everything put together
Sooner or later falls apart
There’s nothing to it, nothing to it
And you can cry
You can lie
For all the good it’ll do you
You can die
But when it’s done
And the police come, and they lay you down for dead
Just remember what I said
Never hides your broken bones
And I don’t know why
You want to try
It’s plain to see you’re on your own
Oh, I ain’t blind, no
Some folks are crazy
Others walk that borderline
Watch what you’re doing
And ups to start you on your way
After a while they’ll change your style
I see it happening every day
Oh spare your heart
Everything put together
Sooner or later falls apart
There’s nothing to it, nothing to it
And you can cry
You can lie
For all the good it’ll do you
You can die
But when it’s done
And the police come, and they lay you down for dead
Just remember what I said

This song is saying that life can be bad and full of pain, but drugs are only going to make matters worse, and in the end they might kill you. It takes the form of advice from someone who sees it 'happening every day'.
This album is full of cynical melancholy songs like this: 'Mother and Child Reunion' (death), 'Run That Body Down' (aging), 'Paranoia Blues' (difficulties of life). A very dark album all around.

@luey_baby I always thought it was called Paraphernalia, lol. Love the song though.

Two years later, I came here to comment, only to realize I already did.
Again, great song. The rhythm of the words, the beautiful guitar work and backing tracks, and the honest and straightforward content give me chills.
I guess not enough people know about this song.
@jcovarru Well, six years later....I'll reply :)

I adore this song - grew up on Paul Simon. And I think you're quite correct: it's a warning about how the negative aspects of drug addiction can affect and alter your life. But it's also about self-esteem, and the fact that we are who we are, regardless of our own self image. There's no need to change, bolster or hide our thoughts and feelings because we are all human, and in the end hiding behind synthetic defences will only make us unhappy, and inauthentic.
