this whole album is about the end of Grandaddy, and this song in particular shows his frustration of how the band tried to succeed but in the end failed.

What a sad song. I don't think this necessarily applies to the end of the band, but perhaps to failure or blocks to success in one's own life, as an analogy to an airplane pilot being denied landing (a common theme in Grandaddy songs). Such a beautiful song, my favorite on the album

I agree this is definetley about the bands failure to get mainstream exposure despite being one of the best bands of the past several years. Also I see it as a song about rejection.

I shall miss you Grandaddy you are a tremendous band and have made several great songs.

It's so clever how it seriously sounds like he's saying "guy down tonight" and the lyrics even make it seem like that's more fitting. Genius you are GD!

I concur with you guys. I've always thought of this song as a nice corollary to "He's Simple, He's Dumb, He's the Pilot". Jason is always so brutally earnest about his fears and apprehensions, and about the duality within us all of wanting success but at the same time fearing all of its scary consequences.

Jason Lytle is, easily, the best rock-and-roll lyricist of the past years.
