Shade and Honey Lyrics

I could look in your face
For a thousand years
It's like a civil war
Of pain and of cheer
But if you was a horse
I could help you with your chains
I could ride you through the fields
By your fiery mane

May your shade be sweet
And float upon the lakes
Where the sun will be
Made of honey

I cry diamonds while you burn
Cause no one here can save you
She's returning to the Earth
But one day she'll be silver
Stars are dying in my chest
Until I see you again
She was born with the wings of a hawk
But now she combs her hair with blood

May your shade be sweet
And float upon the lakes
Where the sun will be
Made of honey
May your shade be sweet
And float upon the lakes
I know the sun could be
Made of honey
May your shade be sweet
May your shade be sweet
And float upon the lakes
May your shade be sweet

I'm not so sure it's about being in love at all, though the some of the lines seem to depict that. If I had to guess, I'd say it has little to do with the actual relationship between the singer and subject, and is more about the subject herself. It certainly is about someone who is depressed, and trying to cheer them up. She may be alone in her sadness but she's not alone in all respects.

"I’ll cry diamonds while you burn cause no one here can save you she’s returning to the earth but one day she’ll be silver"

Notice he's not burning with her, but he feels some level of pain for the fact that she's in pain. No one can really help the situation at hand, but with the words "one day, she'll be silver" implies that there is a "one day" in the future and that everything will be better then.

Not really certain what this song is about but the images that the words conjure up are simply beautiful. I just love this song!

I'm pretty sure he doesn't say "write you a poem" in that one verse, but I have no idea what he says. Sounds like "while you burn" to me.

my femme fatale recommended this to me today.

i think it's about being in love with a person who is depressed: 'she was born with the wings of a hawk; but now she combs her hair with blood'.

it sounds to me like he's singing about someone who he cares about, but I don't get the impression he's in love. it's more like a close friend who's depressed, and he knows he's just got to distance himself and let the friend hit bottom so that they can climb back out again. I could be biased somewhat by current events in my life, though.

Think he's singing about someone he loved who's dead.

The "shade" he's referring to is a ghost.

The second verse really supports the above interpretation, I think. It also seems to be consistent with "Some Sweet Day" later on the album.
