I think this song is beautiful. According to the "official" Bob Pollard/GBV "biography" by Jim Greer, while the lyrics themselves don't have any deep meaning, the title came from a high school sports title (the actual high school and sport evade me, as I have returned my copy of the book to the person who lent it to me - GBV fans return things that are lent to them, darn it) that Bob and Tobin Sprout attended in which, during halftime, a line of 14 cheerleaders came forth, looking about as bored as can be.

"Look," either Bob or Tobin said (obviously, I'm not a very good storyteller - maybe you should buy the book yourself), "a fourteen cheerleader cold front."

Afterward, when Bob came across Toby playing a particular melody on a guitar, Bob began to write the lyrics to 14 Cheerleader Cold Front to it.

Or so the story goes, anyway

I think it's "Youth's Companions," not "used companions."
