Sand and Foam Lyrics

The sun was going down behind a tattooed tree
And the simple act of an oar's stroke put diamonds in the sea
And all because of the phosphorus there in quantity
As I dug you diggin' me in Mexico.

There in the valley of Scorpio, beneath the cross of jade
Smoking on the seashell pipe the gypsies had made
We sat and we dreamed a while of smugglers bringing wine
In that crystal thought time in Mexico.

Sitting in a chair of bamboo, sipping grenadine,
Straining my eyes for a surfacing submarine.
Kingdoms of ants walk across my feet,
I'm a-shakin' in my seat in Mexico.

Grasshoppers creaking in the velvet jungle night,
Microscopic circles in the fluid of my sight,
Watching a black-eyed native girl cut and trim the lamp,
Valentino vamp in Mexico.

The sun was going down behind a tattooed tree
And the simple act of an oar's stroke put diamonds in the sea
And all because of the phosphorus there in quantity
I dug you diggin' me in Mexico

This is one of the songs Donovan wrote while he believed his carreer in music was over. According to his autobiography "As I dug you diggin' me" refers to Linda (Brian Jone's baby-momma), the love of his life, with whom he was communicating spiritually.

And oh god, I must comment of the phosphorus imagery -- I thought it was fairly common becasue at my friend's cabin it's there 30% of the times we wanna go night-swimming, but apparently it's unusual. For those of you who HAVEN'T experienced bioluminesence, just use your imagination and you won't overestimate how magical it was. Once the sea lit up SO much it was like I was GLOWING. All of me, from the inside out. No, no drugs or alcohol was involved. I cried the first time I heard this song. It made me learn to play guitar. Now you know.

A wonderful song with very trippy lyrics. Could it be about a wonderful, and possibly trippy, time in Mexico?

by the way, these were incredibly difficult to find, but here's the complete tab. Really simple once you get the hang of it; it's only a couple chords.

Great song... best description ever! He materializes so well the environment that we can SEE it while listening to the song. Just chill... it's summer in Mexico, a chair of bamboo, smoking on a pipe, sipping grenadine... what more can we have? Makes me think of a perfect moment, when time seems to stop.

It also makes me think of Jack Kerouac's On the road when they go to Mexico, smoke marijuana, are stone and just let things go! Be aware of the present moment. If there's something to do, do it manana. Manana, a word that means heaven...
