D.O.A. Lyrics

Laying here looking at the ceiling
Someone lays a sheet across my chest
Something warm is flowing down my fingers
Pain is flowing all through my back

I try to move my arms and there's no feeling
And when I look I see there's nothing there
The face beside me stopped it totally bleeding
The girl I knew has such a distant stare

I remember
We were flying along and hit something in the air
I remember
We were flying along and hit something in the air

Then I looked straight at the attendant
His face is pale as it can be
He bends and whispers something softly
He says there's no chance for me

I remember
We were flying along and hit something in the air
I remember
We were flying along and hit something in the air

Life is flowing out my body
Pain is flowing out with my blood
The sheets are red and moist where I'm lying
God in Heaven, teach me how to die

I remember
We were flying along and hit something in the air
I remember
We were flying along and hit something in the air

Hands down the creepiest song ever to hit the Top 40. This song is about a person laying dead after being in a plane crash. In the song, you can hear where he starts to slip away and then the ambulance sirens take him to the hospital where he is dead on arrivial.

I agree Richie. Very haunting. Sister Morphine is another song that used to scare the shit out of me when I was a kid.

Pretty sure the lyrics are wrong. Should be "we were flying low (not along) and hit something in the air" Flying low is an expression for going fast. I always thought this was about a car crash, not an airplane crash.

The real question is, what did they hit in the air.......? That's what frightens me the most.......

I know right! It's super creepy! One of those songs you shouldn't listen too at night. Just picturing the situations gives me chills...

The question remains; is he remembering from "the beyond" ? Or, did he recover and is recalling the incident?

The song is truly creepy -- meaning well-conceived and well-recorded -- but crassly exploitative of the teens, tweens and grade-schoolers whose imaginations were all wrapped up in their AM radios (and really, what else was there besides the Bradys and the Partridges on TV?) It's the same sort of hucksterism that gave us "Timothy" (which I also think is a great recording).

Both songs haunted my sleep when I was little.

I've read that the song was "inspired" by a college football team's plane crash -- I think the one from the "We Are Marshall" movie....

This song comes from one of the band members, he was interested in learning to fly. One of his friends had just learned to fly and crashed his plane as he watched.

Hit something in the air; makes me think how some people have had their roof taken off by the back of a truck or something
