i listened to this song again and i reolized it was kind of depressing that the guy had a girlfriend that he really liked and it didnt work out
I kinda liked the old catch version where the bass line was a little more heavily emphasized.
The bass playing in this one is technically far superior... but I do agree with you. Catch's version almost sounded like it was being played slap.
This and Supernothing are the only two tracks that I prefer the Catch 22 versions of.
They ruined a good song.
I do not like the new horns for this song. They're too clean and a bit weak sounding. And I absolutely hate the end of the trumpet-trombone duet. When the trumpet does it's falling notes. It sounds like they gave up. The other version sounds so bright and ends with such pizzaz.
I still like the bass in the Catch version too because it has a more of a swing feel to it. Which is what I originally loved about the song.
For this song, I'll listen to the Catch verson.
From a trumpet player's perspective, the trumpet part in this is WAY more fun to actually play. From a listener's persepctive, I dunno. I don't like how staccato the notes are played, but I like the modified melodies better. Is a toughie, t'be sure.
I do like the catch version better but I wont dwell on it.
On to the meaning of the song, it's like a sonnet, it changes meaning during the middle of the song. The first half of the song two people are friends and they hope it never ends as they are talking and dancing, but then the guy in the song learns she (hopefully it was a she as they were dancing) was faking their friendship, for attention or whatever.
This song has sort of the same meaning as "Dear Sergio:" except the person in "Dear Sergio:" had the same problem and Sergio was looking down on him like "what an ass" where as in this song no one was critisizing her like Sergio was in "Dear Sergio:"
Both the person in "Dear Sergio:" and in this song were faking a relationship to try to fit in. Justifications from these lyrics:

shes wondering why she faked a relationship because she never liked him.
"Goodbye to me, to you, to us, to everything, because it fell apart, as we're walking away."
He recognized that and now hes leaving her.

this song is pretty good i think both versions are good i dont no i think i like streetlight version better
I think this version is far superior to the Catch 22 version (which I also love). It was always obvious they were trying to go for a loungy, jazzy feeling for the song, and I think StreetLight's rerecord caught that perfectly, especially with the trumpet/trombone deul in the middle. This song and Day In Day Out are the only 2 songs off of SM's rerecord of Keasbey that I'm sure are better than they're predecessors. The other songs I can't decide.

People...quit comparing Streetlight Manifesto and Catch 22, just get to the lyrics...thats what the page is about. Well anyways, I would have to agree with imhoterror. It is about someone that everything was perfect with their relationship but then things just started drifting apart. Something I can relate to, its got heart. Sad but cheery song.
