11:11 Lyrics
Standing on the corner
Plastic cup in her hand
Standing on the corner
Saving for some gin
You don't need to ask where she's been or what's up
She'll gladly tell you all about the life she had
Before she had the cup
Standing by the window
Glass of milk in his hand
What could I have done what could I have said
Broken glass spilled milk lying on the floor looking dead
Window pain
Cutting through the rain looks so easy
Frame by frame
Looking for a name to claim on a breezy afternoon
And the ends coming soon
So many people hold a cup
So many die drinking milk in front of a window
I once knew a woman who got in the way
Of the intentions of a windy day
Don't hold a cup in any season
Don't make me choose between rhyme or reason
Don't drink that milk in front of that window
You might as well blame it on the will that the wind chose
Plastic cup in her hand
Standing on the corner
Saving for some gin
You don't need to ask where she's been or what's up
She'll gladly tell you all about the life she had
Before she had the cup
Glass of milk in his hand
What could I have done what could I have said
Broken glass spilled milk lying on the floor looking dead
Cutting through the rain looks so easy
Frame by frame
Looking for a name to claim on a breezy afternoon
And the ends coming soon
So many die drinking milk in front of a window
I once knew a woman who got in the way
Of the intentions of a windy day
Don't hold a cup in any season
Don't make me choose between rhyme or reason
Don't drink that milk in front of that window
You might as well blame it on the will that the wind chose

This song is about a story Andrew Bird read about a boy who's brother, while standing in front of a window drinking a glass of milk, was shot to death. The brother watched as the window shattered, and the glass of milk fell to the floor. He, I imagine, felt entirely helpless as he witnessed the end of his brother's life.
Somewhat coincidentally, the shattered glass from the window flew through the air, and the shooting claimed yet another life as the glass cut through the rain, and killed a woman who had got in the way of the intentions of the wind.
This song obviously deals with the idea of fate, and how certain things are completely inescapable and completely unpredictable. Bad things happen, and sometimes there is nothing we can do to prevent them, they just happen by the winds of chance. No one is to really be blamed, save for maybe the will that the wind chose.

they say if you make a wish when you see 11:11 and it can alter your reality. So its kind of like a hold on fate, or mastering it. So I'd say this song title is implying irony.
I didn't listen to this album, and I chose to start listening to it from this song because it's called 11:11 and that's my wishing time during the day...
So does anyone know why it's called 11:11?
I think you answered your own question, butterscotch. And even before you asked it.
11:11, and any time of day of the sorts (3:33, 5:55, 12:12, etc.) commonly is a "wishing" time, if you believe in that sort of superstition, so it would make sense that a story about fate and unpredictablility is entitled accordingly.
It's almost as if the odds of a such a situation actually occuring (that is, what fiddlehacks explained) are as whimsical as that symmetry superstition, or perhaps even the intentions of the wind.
Makes good sense, I just thought it might have had some other significance. Thanks though!

I absolutely love this song! When I first discovered Bird's Bowl of Fire this song was forever on repeat. You can just hear the emotion in his playing but the way his voice travels in this song moves me.
