Pena Lyrics

Pena
Her litle head clinking
Like a barrel of red velvet balls
Full past noise
Treats filled her eyes
Turning them yellow like enamel coated tacks
Soft like butter hard not to pour
Out enjoying the sun while sitting on a turned on waffle iron
Smoke billowing up from between her legs
Made me vomit beautifully
And crush a chandelier
Fall on my stomach 'n view her
From a thousand happened facets
Liquid red salt ran over crystals
I later band-aided the area
Sighed
Oh well it was worth it
Pena pleased but sore from sitting
Choose to stub her toe
'n view the white pulps horribly large in their red pockets
"I'm tired of playing baby," she explained
'n out of uh blue felt box let escape
One yellow butterfly the same size
Its dropping were tiny green phosphorous worms
That moved in tuck 'n rolls that clacked
'n whispered in their confinement
Three little burnt scotch taped windows
Several yards away
Mouths open to tongues that vibrated
'n lost saliva
Pena exclaimed, "That's the raspberries."

Actually, captainlumpy, this particular song on Trout Mask Replica is spoken rather than sung, by Antenna Jimmy Semens rather than the Captain.

In terms of what the song is actually about, the imagery is extremely sexual, albeit filtered through several layers of hallucinatory metaphor. I always thought "pena" might mean clitoris, but possibly I'm being too literal....

@losttango There was a whole group of Pena poems, most of them lost. (Hey Garland... is another - that song was written and rehearsed around the same time as this, even if it wasn't recorded till 1982). Don was inordinately fond of this - in rehearsals he had Jeff Cotton reciting it over and over until everyone was sick of it (Cotton in particular)

Fast and bulbous! patchworkcat what do you mean he made it unlistenable? It's pure genius, if I was to choose one artist's work to listen to on a desert island for life, it'd definitely be Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band.Ps. the singer you refer to is Don Van Vliet.

@captainlumpy - I believe Antenna Jimmy Semens recites this particular song.

Also I forget to add... my fave image in this song "Out enjoying the sun while sitting on a turned on waffle iron, smoke billowing up from between her legs, made me vomit beautifully"... its just so obscure and weird but I love it. methinks I might do some art inspired by this song.

The singer (can't remember) made it unlistenable, that's for sure.

@patchwork cat It's Jeff Cotton (or Antennae Jimmy Semens if you prefer)
