The Night Chicago Died Lyrics
Daddy was a cop on the east side of Chicago
Back in the U.S.A. back in the bad old days
In the heat of a summer night
In the land of the dollar bill
When the town of Chicago died
And they talk about it still
When a man named Al Capone
Tried to make that town his own
And he called his gang to war
With the forces of the law
I heard my mama cry
I heard her pray the night Chicago died
Brother what a night it really was
Brother what a fight it really was
Glory be!
I heard my mama cry
I heard her pray the night Chicago died
Brother what a night the people saw
Brother what a fight the people saw
Yes indeed!
And the sound of the battle rang
Through the streets of the old east side
'Til the last of the hoodlum gang
Had surrendered up or died
There was shouting in the street
And the sound of running feet
And I asked someone who said
"'Bout a hundred cops are dead!"
I heard my mama cry
I heard her pray the night Chicago died
Brother what a night it really was
Brother what a fight it really was
Glory be!
I heard my mama cry
I heard her pray the night Chicago died
Brother what a night the people saw
Brother what a fight the people saw
Yes indeed!
And ther was no sound at all
But the clock upon the wall ......
Then the door burst open wide
And my daddy stepped inside
And he kissed my mama's face
And he brushed her tears away
The night Chicago died
(Na-na na, na-na-na, na-na-na)
The night Chicago died
Brother what a night the people saw
Brother what a fight the people saw
Yes indeed!
The night Chicago died
(Na-na na, na-na-na, na-na-na)
The night Chicago died
Brother what a night it really was

Yeah, the lyrics are pretty self-explanatory. Al Capone and his rival gangs ran it well into the ground and turned a beloved city into a living hell.
I loved this song ever since I was a kid. Amazing.
@$p$ When I was a boy my father used to sing this to me :(

Why can't a UK band comment on US history
One of the WORST songs ever recorded. I'm not even from Chicago, but I can tell you this:
1) Chicago has NO east side. It would be underwater because of Lake Michigan. 2) Al Capone and his men never had a shoot-out with the cops--many of the cops were on his payroll.
Every city and town has any compass side whether that side be up against a body of water or not. Chicago's east side is the areas of the city to the west of Lake Michigan.

I Agree with sportsvine; EVERY city has an east (as well as north, south and west) side.

Additionally, Al Capone's men were ALWAYS in run-in's with the law and other gangsters.

Wrong Susan! Chicago most certainly does have an east side. Grant Park? S. Lake Shore dr.? A little road called Michigan ave? Any of those ring a bell? Gino's? Navy Pier for God's sake?
And the shootout not being real? So what? When did it become a rule that a song must contain nothing but factual, documented historical lyrics? Give me a break. 90% of the every song ever recorded contains fictitious lyrics.
Actually, thExile, Chicago has an Eastside, but it is not the east side of downtown which you've described. The Eastside is the name of a neighborhood on Chicago's south side and boarders Indiana (look it up). Unfortunately, most of Chicago has forgotten about this part of Chicago, but the area has a very rich history. For instance, the bridge that the Blues Brothers jump in the movie (95th street bridge) - that was on the Eastside. The memorial Day Massacre of 1937 also took place on the Eastside.

Who cares who did this song or if some facts are not entirely correct. It's a good song.
this song is awesome... but it was sung by a british band... which makes little sense, considering its talking about AMERICAN GANG WARS
