The Greatest Man I Never Knew Lyrics

The greatest man I never knew
Lived just down the hall
And every day we said hello
But never touched at all
He was in his paper
And I was in my room
How was I to know
He thought I hung the moon

The greatest man I never knew
Came home late every night
He never had too much to say
Too much was on his mind
I never really knew him
Oh and now it seems so sad
Everything he gave to us took all he had

Then the days turned into years
And the memories to black and white
He grew cold like an old winter wind
Blowing across my life

The greatest words I never heard
I guess I'll never hear
The man I thought could never die
Has been dead almost a year
He was good at business
But there was business left to do
He never said he loved me
Guess he thought I knew

I believe that this song is about a woman whose father was physicially IN her life, but not emotionally.

The one thing I really love about Reba, and especially in this song, is that she has so much power and emotion in her voice. Besides just having an amazing voice, she really puts her emotions into her songs.

This songs reminds me so much of what my mom has told me about her relationship was like with her father. He has never told her he loved her, was gone a lot as a kid, they just never connected and it broke her heart. He is still around, and I can tell that he does love her, and thinks the world of her, but has never even come close to telling her that.

@piddie1 use to people did not tell you you love them unless you really ment it. People would do thing for you. Be there for you. Never say I love you. You just knew it. That what this songs means to me.

i know exactly what reba is saying. that is how my father was. this song kinda ties in with the song by randy travis called the box.

To me this songs tells of the relationship between a father and a child. Although the father thinks the world of his child and is proud of everything she's become, he doesn't know how to express it. He's got a lot going on in his life and on his mind. It doesn't seem to bother her because she's used to it. Although they live so close to eachother, they're extremely distant. Years go by and he gets old and sick. The unexpected yet unavoidable happens and the father dies. She realizes how much he really did love him but how little they actually knew about eachother.
