The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

if you like this song, try getting some music by a french composer called "eric satie", he was a reclusive eccentric who wrote for solo piano, youll allready know some of his stuff when you hear it, some of it is eccentric and kind of "quirky", but other pieces are minimal, elegant, beautifull and very haunting, like "nightporter" im sure this japan track is referencing satie as a mark of respect, i know that david sylvian is quite reclusive aswel. by the way, does any one know what the film "the nightporter" is about?
It's about a female opera singer in 1960s Vienna running into the commandant of the concentration camp she was confined in during the war and resuming the sado-masochistic relationship they had then, with the roles slightly reversed.<br /> It looks tame nowadays but was the last word in sleaze when it came out, a little undeservedly perhaps. The song kind of maps to the movie, at least in mood. IMO.
