Continued from my comment on Interlude II: Un Assassinio Molto Silenzioso (It is crucial to read that comment to understand the song meaning of The Black Halo)... A defiant Ariel resigns himself to death. He denounces Mephisto as a liar and traitor, and challenges him. He no longer fears the eternal darkness that inevitably awaits. He resolves to live a life of purity and goodness like Helena did, even though he knows it is too late for him to escape damnation. He embraces righteousness, not for any reward-there is no hope of that- but simply to be righteous.

Ariel seems to be mourning the loss of Helena and giving up (Come wind, come snow, come winter land, I have resigned myself to death) and blaming Mephisto for it (You could take me higher so you said I trust in you - I may be a liar but betrayal lies on you), and then suddenly realising how he can still carry on even though he thought he's done for (I possess a power of survival in the cold - life is like a flower as it stumbles out of fall)
