The Debt Collectors Lyrics
In my dreams they're coming to collect.
I got something that they want
and I dont know what it is.
But you hid it in my luggage,
like a needle in a haystack.
So I'm running like a criminal.
I'm sneaking round each corner --
In a phone booth, through a window.
And the air is cold around me.
And I'm running for my life
Borrow, beg, or steal.
Everything is real.
One day you might feel
all right again.
So I kissed you on the lips.
You were sleeping
like a racehorse in the evening --
all that power, motivation
and the endless broken omens.
And I don't know if I love you
but I really wanna own you.
And I've kept you like a secret
from the moment that I found you.
We can make a deal.
Everything is real.
One day I might feel
all right again.
And I can write my way
out of this pain --
that's a promise that you made me
in a letter that you sent me
from Chicago on a freezing day in winter.
Now I feel a little lighter
but it really doesn't matter.
Cuz this love is not obedient.
It's got its own agenda
and it wants to take me over
and it wants to pull you under
and it would like nothing better
than to tear us both to pieces.
And it won't do what it's told
Show me how you feel.
Everything is real.
One day it'll be
all right again.
One day it'll be
all right again.
I got something that they want
and I dont know what it is.
But you hid it in my luggage,
like a needle in a haystack.
So I'm running like a criminal.

How are there no comments? This is one of my favorites of his, in part because of the lines 'you were sleeping like a racehorse in the evening / all that power and motivation and the endless broken omens...'
Anyway, meanings... best guess is that he's got some problems and this girl is going to make him work through them ('...But you hid it in my luggage...', 'One day I might feel all right again') and that 'One day it'll be all right again.' But I'm really not sure... there's plenty within the song that could contradict that...
any other guesses?
im not really sure on what this song means, a guess would be something about a long distance relationship or somebody in a relationship leaving to somewhere but i doubt thats it
when I saw Ben he said that this song was a result of a dream he had after a night spent in a bar drinking absynthe with Connor Oberst. he said that in the dream Connor had planted vicodin in his luggage and security found it. he also said that Connor was the only guy he knew that kissed every man he met on the lips, hence the "so I kissed you on the lips".
I don't know if this is a genuine connection, but the line "And I've kept you like a secret" immediately struck me as being almost exactly the title of Built to Spill's 1999 album, "Keep It Like a Secret" (which is a fantastic album, by the way).
Just thought I'd point this out in case no one else noticed!
Cheers
