She Was Only In It For The Rain Lyrics
She swore out the lights when she said that she was
only in it for the rain
she made of her bed a naive
nativity
just in case it became - just in case
here's
the 1st of many songs you wanted me to write
just
for you I hope to god you like it
it's as pretty as it
is cruel
it's as pretty as it is cruel
she swore out the
lights when she dammed herself to sleep
her thirteenth
finger my whiskey drink
and she wept at the scene as
the ambulance drove off
come circumference, come
circumstance
here's the 1st of many songs you wanted
me to write
just for you I hope to god you like it
and it may seem pretty cruel but mercy is not my name
and our kids I hope to god you counted them
you're as pretty as you are cruel
you're as pretty as you are cruel
you're as pretty as you are cruel
only in it for the rain
she made of her bed a naive
nativity
just in case it became - just in case

I feel like this is a song about a girl who liked being in a bad relationship, and that she stayed in what was clearly a failing relationship with the narrator for some bizarre reason that people do: she's happy in being unhappy. I think we've all known that sort of a person, who is always pissed and hateful in their relationship, yet they seem heartbroken when it's over. Then, as soon as they're back together, it's back to perpetual bitchiness. I get the feeling that he's acknowledging and calling her out for this behavior.
very beautiful song. this is the first song by rocky that was hooked in my head.
"this is the first of many songs you wanted me to write just for you"
good lyric
i love the fact that
"it's as pretty as it is cruel"
can pretty much apply to anything in life.
This girl that Rocky is singing about, I think she is confused, a lost soul that is wondering and happened upon Rocky. He doesn't know how to handle her, what she is really thinking. He isn't obsessed with her, but still, she can't escape his thoughts. There is something very alluring about her, but something in her that he fears too.
fucking awesome
she made of her bed a naive nativity --ah brilliant. This is one of my favorite Rocky Votolato songs. I don't really know what this song means. Makes me think the girl commted suicide though.
what is the thirteenth finger?
yeah i wasn't sure about the thirteenth finger either. the only thing i could think of is picturing it like a clock. the "thirteenth finger" could be the clock striking past midnight, not necessarily 1 am but some time that's not really existent. Makes me think of him drinking whiskey on a dark late night and a big grandfather clock. It gives a real dark feeling. I think I read a reference like that in a poem once but i can't remember. Good song

F.Y.I. - This song was actually written by Piss Pissedofferson, singer/songwriter for the The Devil's Own, a San Francisco based band. Rocky's version is stellar, though. It's on the soundtrack for the indie movie "My Suicide"...David Carradine's last movie before his own suicide.
"her thirteen finger my whiskey drink"
you measure straight alcohol with fingers. thirteen fingers measures up to about a bottle. i think he's saying she had a whole bottle when he had just one glass
thirteenth not thirteen, my bad
