i agree, this song is incredibly sexy. and not in the least bit creepy! i think regina's got a great handle on how to write from the point of the view of the opposite sex.
respektology, why do you assume Regina is writing from the "point of the view of the opposite sex"? She is clearly saying "why shouldn't it be me", which is more indicative that the point of view is that of another woman.

I could really be reaching here, but it's somewhat eating disorderish to me.
i agree with aspekt it sounds like its from a woman point of view. but i dont rly know about the eating disorder, what do you mean?
"Why shouldn't it be me?" does imply that there is something unattainable or socially unacceptable about consummating the relationship, as does "Don't tell me what's proper/ Anyone can see/ I wasn't even her first/ So don't blame it on me." I feel like there must be something more to it--something more taboo than it just being a woman talking about another woman. Or is that still pretty taboo?

And that with the very dark, creepy retro-blues of the song which gives it this primal atmospheric quality. It's rape. Although the idea of woman envy is interesting, but it doesn't take all the lines of the song into account.

It's so creepy how much this reminds me of things I've heard guys say, especially the part about "I wasn't even her first" As for it being from a man's point of view even though it's sung by Regina, she's said in interviews that she ofter writes songs from the point of view of someone completely different, and she has songs from men's point of view (Oedipus comes to mind, I can't remember any others).

There are barely words to describe how much I can relate to this song. I do see it as about a sort of shy and insecure girl who sees another girl who with all her grace and long brown hair, becomes jealous and even more insecure, perhaps develops an eating disordeer
"Her skin was tight, her manner was free.." The girl with the long brown hair is like a social butterfly and very confident. "Her body was free" means to be that she is thin and isnt afraid to be herself.

Im the type of person would not even have to know the girl, but just to see someone from far away looking so pretty and happy I get jealous and start to get angry with myself, assuming that they have the perfect life and how all the guys like her and things like that.

It doesn't even have to mean the pretty girl at school but the pretty model girls in the magazines, "perfect bodies" are everywhere in the media and the on looker wishes she had that, she believes if she can only look partly like the pretty girl (by getting a thin, free body), she can a taste of what it is like to have that perfect life. "Don't tell me what's proper, anyone can see." It's not right to starve to yourself and the narrator knows that but she can't help herself because she just isnt happy and wants to be like the girl with the long brown hair
