Actually, when Buffett says "Little roadside resturant, we artfully complain. Rudy tells the waitress that his chicken died in vain."
It's actually "Groovey", not Rudy. Groovey is my uncle Larry, and Jimmy is talking about he and my uncle Larry on a road side restaurant one evening. My family is very close to Jimmy Buffet and in 2003 my uncle passed away in a plane crash. Jimmy Buffet refers to him in his song. "But I'd tell the wind and my old friend I'm headed home to you." He is talking about my uncle. Also, the song title refers to him as well. My uncle crashed his plane on the Coast of Carolina!

He asked his wife, Jane, on a date in a phone booth in Key West. He and his wife Jane had some significance with a phone booth in Key West one night. Jimmy also met his wife Jane through my Uncle Larry. I think this song was written in a tribute to his past and my uncle Larry. I have met Jimmy Buffett and he is a very close family/friend.
JD Spradlin said on Radio Margaritaville that this song came about when Mac McAnally suggested to Jimmy that they write a song revisiting the characters from "Come Monday" thirty years later.
This is one of my all time FAVORITE Jimmy Buffett songs. At one time, this was my song.
It's basically saying that this couple has not had it easy in the past, and that one has made mistakes and believes that it can still work, but they just have to try a little harder, just like they always have. There is also a looking back on memories, and saying that they'll do anything to make it right, and make it work.
My favorite line is: "After one or two false starts I believe we've found our stride."
This song is beautiful, and I absolutely love it!
I also love this song for the same reason. It is exactly how I feel about my last relationship. Mistakes were made but it wasn't anything that wasn't overcome able. Amazing song. Jimmy Buffett never fails to amaze me with his music
