Burn Lyrics
Love is like a tyranny
And I'm a tyrant sentencing
You said that you believed in me
And would burn for your beliefs
I watched you burn
Burn for me
I watched you burn
Burn for me
Love's some kind of sorcery
An inquisition's questioning
You said that you believed in me
And to take you on sometime
You said that you believed in me
And would burn for your beliefs
I watched you burn
I watched you burn for me
I watched you burn
Burn for me
But now I wonder how
I stood by
I let you down
Maybe I couldn't see
That you would burn for me
You were strong and clever
And I didn't know any better
I didn't know any better
I could have set you free
But I watched you burn
I could have set you free
But I watched you burn
And I'm a tyrant sentencing
You said that you believed in me
And would burn for your beliefs
I watched you burn
Burn for me
I watched you burn
Burn for me
Love's some kind of sorcery
An inquisition's questioning
You said that you believed in me
And to take you on sometime
You said that you believed in me
And would burn for your beliefs
I watched you burn
I watched you burn for me
I watched you burn
Burn for me
But now I wonder how
I stood by
I let you down
Maybe I couldn't see
That you would burn for me
You were strong and clever
And I didn't know any better
I didn't know any better
I could have set you free
But I watched you burn
I could have set you free
But I watched you burn

beautiful new song.
seems like caithlin didnt realize what the other would do for her.. she sort of knew, and let destruction happen anyway. she let the other 'burn' at their expense, for her, although she was fully capable of changing the situation. sad. ("love is like a tyranny and i'm a tyrant sentencing"). she pretty much made all decisions that led to the ruin of another.
sounds like my life.
i love this song so much. rainer maria never gets old and never ceases to amaze me.
I'm surprised it hasn't gotten more comments. This song is basically realizing that somebody truly cared about her, and wanted whats best for her. "you said that you believed in me, and would burn for your beliefs"
impressive.
it's about not having the confidence or the strength to love someone...it's about being scared to love someone because you don't believe that they would love you enough to do anything for you including being burned. and you just won't believe or trust them, because you selfishly don't want yourself to get hurt. you'd rather have them burn in their love for you. they're willing to give you everything, and you just take and take and take because you can (like a tyrant)...in the end, you can't even do the very simple thing of letting them go, trusting them, loving them.
it's like in frank stockton's amazing short story, "the lady or the tiger," in which the princess has the ultimate decision of sending her convicted lover to the teeth of the tiger or to a lovely new bride...if he dies, he will have lived only loving the princess and her alone. but if he marries, the princess will be forever suffering in her jealousy because he cannot be hers. which pain is worse? having your lover dead or knowing that he is there but you cannot be with him?
I love the imagery of burning at the stake. This is probably because I'm a mythology nerd, but I really get a King Arthur/Queen Guinivere vision in my head when I read the lyrics. The other person says they would die for you... will you only understand what they meant about the depth of their love and caring only after they have to keep their word on that?
