The last part of the chorus is "How does it feel to be a lie?" Not "How does it feel to be alive?"

I made this mistake at first too, but then I listened a little closer.

Leeches, They preach to us. Words of wisdom from blocked minds. A tear for the poet. That can't be heard Praise the artist that steals.

Of course In Flames lyrics can by interpreted in many diffrent ways but this is the way I like to interprete them.

"Leeches We're like leeches In ignorance we trust"

• We're like leeches refers to humanity only leeching from mother earth and not giving back. This is a pagan interpretation but IF lyrics can in many cases be interpreted pagan.
• in ignorance we trust We idolise and almost worship people who do not really care about this world like pop-musicians, politicians and religious leaders. Blind leading the blind.

"If you say this way I will take that way Fuel for the fire on which I thrive"

• If you say this way I will take that way stands for the person realising the statement made in the previous couplet that will ultimately reject the current pop-culture and be very diffrent from so called leeches.
• Fuel for the fire on which I thrive refers to the growing confidence in a person that rejects the leeches by seeing how little they know and how close-minded they are.

"Spit me out I'm glad I don't belong Save me the speech You'll be forgotten and gone"

• Spit me out, I'm glad I don't belong The person who rejects the leeches will be happy with his 'lonely' place in society.
• Save me the speech The person who rejects the leeches does not care about leeches looking down on him because he knows more about the actual world than the leech.
• You'll be forgotten and gone Very powerful one... If humanity continues as it is, it will take down the world and the people on it. On the other hand: if humanity realises it is going down the drain they will assign the leech as the cause of this.

• Words of wisdom from blocked minds refers to muslims, jews and christians thinking that they figured it all out while in fact they are the root to all problems in this world.

"It burns It rips it hurts They make you believe your turn The chance of a lifetime How does it feel to be alive?"

• It burns it rips it hurts it is painful for the person who rejects the leeches to see the world going down the drain.
• How does it feel to be alive? Refers to the leeches thinking they know what life is about and them looking down on the persons who reject them and not understanding why they don't want to 'be alive'.

"A tear for the poet That can't be heard Praise the artist that steals"

• I never understood this to be honest....

And as best i can tell, they are saying that the music industry (on radio and pop in particular) is mostly an assembly line now, all you need is a pretty face, decent (but not exceptional voice), someone to write the music and lyrics for you, and then they market the shit out of you. No surprise that in 1 to 2 years you're washed up and 20 years from now no one will remember much about you. this type of manufacturing is also found frequently in Hip Hop as well, although country was built on it ;-) They also indicate that this makes bands with a unique sound, like In Flames, stick out more in the contrast.

Interesting... most of that is completly not what it sounds like to me. The top version sounds about right but i do think its "In ignorance we trust" and on the "chance of a lifetime" it sounds a lot more like "turn of a lifetime". Also rather than "pray to yours i steal" sounds like "Raising arms of steel".
