Bíum Bíum Bambaló Lyrics

Bíum, bíum, bambaló,
Bambaló og dillidillidó.
Vini mínum vagga ég í ró
En úti bíður andlit á glugga

Þegar fjöllin fimbulhá
Fylla brjóst þitt heitri þrá
Leika skal ég langspil á,
það mun þinn hugann hugga

Bíum, bíum, bambaló,
Bambaló og dillidillidó.
Vini mínum vagga ég í ró
En úti bíður andlit á glugga

Þegar veður geysa grimm,
Grúfir yfir hríðin dimm,
Kveiki ég á kertum fimm,
Burflæmi skammdegis skugga

Bíum bíum bambaló [nonsense words, sort of like 'rock-a-by baby' in English] Bambaló og dillidillidó [nonsense words, sort of like 'rock-a-by baby' in English] My little friend I lull to rest But outside, a face looms at the window

When the mighty mountains fill your chest with burning desire, I will play the langspil [violin-fiddle-like instrument] and soothe your mind

Bíum bíum bambaló [nonsense words, sort of like 'rock-a-by baby' in English] Bambaló og dillidillidó [nonsense words, sort of like 'rock-a-by baby' in English] My little friend I lull to rest But outside, a face looms at the window

When the cruel storms rage and the dark blizzard crouches above, I shall light five candles and drive away the winter/twilight shadows

It's an Icelandic lullaby. Rather creepy because "En úti bíður andlit á glugga" means "but outside waits a face in the window" ... and this is sung to small children when they go to sleep. >.<

My mom used to sing it to me when I was little.

Sleep, sleep, baby, Baby and ....., My friend cradles me in peace, But outside waits a face at the window,

Immediately mountains, Fill my breast with warm longing, I shall play the langspil, That is my mind's comfort,

Sleep, sleep, baby, Baby and ....., My friend cradles me in peace, But outside waits a face at the window,

Immediately the weather gets cruel, Crouch over while it gets dark, I light five candles, To burn the shadows of midwinter...

That's my translation. I'm not fluent in Icelandic and I had to use my dictionary for a few words. Dillidillido doesn't seem to have a translation, I suspect it means mother or something similar. The face outside at the window is the oncoming winter. In Iceland the winters are harsh, dark and cold (in midwinter the sun doesn't even rise). The second stanza is about longing for spring and playing an Icelandic instrument called the Langspil to pass the long winter months. The last verse reflects the harshness of winter and lighting candles to try and get spirits up. It's a lullaby with the promise of spring and it shows the resolution and tolerance of the Icelanders.

This song is so sad. Mostly because it was playd in Páll's funeral in Englar Alheimsins (Angels of the Universe) But infact nearly all Icelandic lullabies are really sad & scary 'cause they were sung to the children so they wouldn't wonder outside alone. I still remember how scared I was when this & other lullabies were sung to me as a child. But this song is still one of the most beautiful songs ever!
