And just as my eyes start seeing
After all the pain
The twist in my life starts healing
Just to twist again
In stillness, in sorrow
Returns that softly sighing lament
And just as the smile's returning
After all the pain
The fire inside stops burning
Just to burn again
In moments of madness
Returns that softly sighing lament
After all the pain
The twist in my life starts healing
Just to twist again
In stillness, in sorrow
Returns that softly sighing lament
After all the pain
The fire inside stops burning
Just to burn again
In moments of madness
Returns that softly sighing lament

To be honest, I'm not exactly sure what Lament is about, but my guess is that it's about recovering from being hurt emotionally by someone, only to have that person return and reopen the same wounds.
It's not difficult to deceifer, it's about loss....you can go many directions from there however the term LAMENT says it all..... there's no hidden meaning. The beautiful lacing of syntax by ULTRAVOX makes it mysterious like BLUE OYSTER CULTs Reaper but it's more earthbound than one may think.
I agree with LuvMartinGore and lyricist1111 however, when I first got into this song my interpretation was slightly different.
Agreed it could be reconciling with the same person who treated you badly. It could also mean falling for a different person and foreseeing the same sequence of events and end result happening again.
My own experience biases my interpretation (obviously). After being with my first wife, divorcing then being single to then fall in love and resisting believing it would end badly eventually.
I agree with LuvMartinGore. Funny I woke up with this song in my head. It is an experience that I've been thru more than once in my life - falling for the wrong person. Some of us do not learn from past mistakes, we get so caught up in the moment and by the time you realize it your down the same road again. It's being hurt emotionally, getting back on that horse again, and to be knocked off again over and over...at least this is how I interpret it thru my own experience.
It doesn't have to be about being hurt by a person.
