"Newborn" as written by and Martin Lee Gore....
For the first time
I'm not born again
I have never lived at all
I've opened up my eyes
Now I hear the world talking
Opened up my eyes
I've just started walking

I've got someone who cares for me
Someone who believes in me
I've got someone understanding me
Someone crying over me
For all the right reasons

I've got someone seeing grace in me
Someone respecting me
I've got someone who's there for me
Someone saying prayers for me
For all the right reasons

General CommentNow this is a very optimistic song... I haven't heard such an optimism in Martin's songs for a while... I also think this is the only reason why it is a "B-side" and was not included in the "Playing The Angel" album. It's not that it's not a good enough song for an album, it just didn't fit its theme ("pain and suffering").

General interpretation: This song, in general, is about someone who's experiencing a major change in his life - a change for good... Just like a newborn child, he's openning his eyes, learning to walk, etc... He actually discovers a "new world" he was not even aware of before. It could, of course, be related to a new lover or partner, found after years of being with the wrong one.

Less general, this could be related to the songwriter himself - Martin L. Gore - which was divorced not long ago... Maybe he found a new lover that makes him feel that good? Not sure... Or maybe leaving a painful marriage, and being "free" for the first time, is that major change that "opened up his eyes"? Well, sound more like Martin... ;-)

Now from personal point of view... I like this song very much, as I've experienced myself some kind of major change in my life, about a year ago... At the age of 29, I started doing things I didn't ever do in my life before... There was an event (a near-death accident) that changed my general point of view in life. The first time I read the lyrics for this song, I almost cryed... It was like I wrote this song by myself, word by word.
I was newborn at the age of 29, and I really feel like I was "asleep" or actually "never lived at all" all these years.

    What do YOU think?

P.S. - If you haven't heard the song yet, do yourself a favor, and listen to the original version of it (the B-side of "A Pain That I'm Used To"). The remixes simply kill this song.
