holy goodness gracious this song is a.m.a.z.i.n.g. doesn't sound really anything like their other songs, so it surprised me. i LOVE it.

This song could have allot of different meanings, but I think the main idea is that this guy and this girl, Holly, both loved each other, and now hes gone away to california to make it big and try his luck there. Inside he still loves herr, but cant decide whether or not to let her know or not. H'es obviously lonely and cares about her and thinks about her, but he doesnt know how to go about loving her again so he drinks his heartache away until he forgetts about her. I totally relate cuz I live in south cali and it can be very lonely.

No, I think Holly is his current girlfriend and he's being honest with her.

His ex is unamed. He's telling Holly to forgive him for seeming distant or sad. It's because he misses the ex and seeing her sends him into a tailspin (the drinking).

It seem to me as if Holly is his ex. He misses her badly and in his lonely, drunken nights he is reflecting on his current lonely lifestyle without her..."Well Holly, she makes me sad Forgive me if I look so lonely It's not that bad".

I'm not quite sure bc it gets a little hazy around the middle of the song but based on other songs (Wasteland, Sundays Best) and portions of this one it seems as if he has seen her since the break up "I ain't seen you look so good" and it has only made him long for her more. It seems as if he may even suggest her coming back to CA "California might be warm this time of year we should go". (Since she has left for Boston to start a new life and left him behind).

Whether or not she did or did not eventually come back with him for a bit is hard to say but the bottom ine to the song (as in many of the other if not all of the songs is that he is so lonely...with or without her but especially without her.
"Sometimes it's just the sound of the TV that gets me always wondering why Sometimes it's just a conversation that makes me cry It makes me cry" ....these lyrics seem to only further emphasize his lonliness and depression. Sometimes it is something as innocent and simple as the TV or a conversation that get him spiralling downward. He so sad and alone that sometiems that's all it takes.

i agree with cubbyblues too...makes more sense... I only just realised how awesome this song is...I've had it a while but it always got left in the background, besides the likes of Boston and Stars and Boulevards... Thee's just so much emotion in his voice in this song...

wow i love this song so much. i wish that they didnt include drinking in lots of their songs though. but i love the part of this song where it says "Hey, well I know California might be warm this time of year I should go, turn the engine and the radio But it's cold, always cold" thats my fav part. Daniel Layus has such a sweet and soothing and angelic voice and i can never get enough of it. I LOVE AUGUSTANA!
