Coffee and Cigarettes Lyrics

Wake up, take your pills dear
I know this time of year ain't right for you
You came with a sickness
Shot down back in Christmas kamikaze rain

And I'm sure you've lost that weight again
And I'm sure the pills keeps pouring in
Like smoke that falls, it's caving into you
So put me on a plane and fly me to anywhere
Put me on a plane and fly me to anywhere
Put me on a plane and fly me to anywhere with you
With you

One night when you woke up
You bled til you spoke up
Oh, this ain't pretty dear
With clocks, watch the time go
Til spring, when the sun can finally be free

And I'm sure you've lost that weight again
And I'm sure the pills keeps pouring in
We'll scream at night to make it go away
So put me on a plane and fly me to anywhere
Put me on a plane and fly me to anywhere
You should put me on a plane and fly me to anywhere but you
But you
But you

We'll scream at night to make them go away
So put me on a plane and fly me to anywhere
Put me on a plane and fly me to anywhere
Put me on a plane and fly me to anywhere but you
But you
But you
But you

Cover art for Coffee and Cigarettes lyrics by Augustana

all of Augustana's songs have a recurring theme of going away and coming back and just trying to look for a home. and from the Augustana interviews I've read, they've been to 48 states out of the 50, so that kinda shows something. And Dan Layus (the lead singer) said the songs are more about looking for a home in a person rather than a place.

I thought the song might be about Seasonal Affective Disorder, because SAD comes at around the same time every year (usually with a season, for example: symptoms may last through Autumn and Winter). "I know this time of year ain't right for you You came with a sickness Shot down back in Christmas kamikaze rain"

and we know depression can be treated with medication. "Wake up, take your pills dear"

and weight loss can be a symptom of depression. "And I'm sure you've lost that weight again"

And with SAD, the symptoms may clear up with Spring (when winter finishes). "With clocks, watch the time go Til spring, when the sun can finally be free"

That might just be my interpretation :/ Beautiful song though :3

My Interpretation
Cover art for Coffee and Cigarettes lyrics by Augustana

this song is beautiful. it reminds me of a good friend of mine.

how we share dreams of grandeur, how we want to explore everything and how the trials of life always seem to get in our way. silly things like weight, addiction, and others.

Augustana at their best.

I think it might be about him loving her despite all her imperfections and her unhappiness.

oh i love this song. it's so bittersweet.

i agree, he loves this girl no matter the fact that she's unhappy and imperfect, overdosing on pills and drugs and self-injury..

but nonetheless, one of my most favorite songs ever.

I think its that he knows someone has problems. Maybe its not even that she overdoses, or that she hurts herself. It seems to obvious that way. I think that he knows somethings wrong, and he can't really understand it, but he's trying. He wants to understand, and he wants to be able to help ("put me on a plane and fly me to anywhere with you"). He wants to know what and why and how so that he can try to fix her, or at least console her the right way. This song made me cry the first time I heard it. I got extremely sick right around the time it came out and no one could understand, no matter how hard they tried. And this song just made me feel...not so alone.

i'm in love with this song...my fav line is when it says "so put me on a plane and fly me to anywhere with you" then at the end it switches to "...anywhere but you." omg...amazing...to me, this song is about a guy and his g/f...the g/f isn't "well" but the guy wants to be there for her if she needs him, but at the end of the song, he realizes its pointless trying to save her...she's too far gone

i may be completely off, but i thought this song could be about someone with an eating disorder. she "came with a sickness" of wanting to be perfect, and might be taking pills to keep it off. her boyfriend, or friend singing this song, knows she has a problem and wants to help her, but can't. he want to take her away from all these troubles, but she's too sick. he knows she's not getting better and keeps losing more weight, so at the end he can't deal with her and leaves, ( 'anywhere with you' to 'anywhere but you'). very sad, but amazing song.
