California's Burning Lyrics

California's burning, burning, burning to the ground
And my head is turning, turning, turning round and round
Alie's stomach's churning, churning, like a storm today
And your mother's crying, crying, closing up the safe

And I'm here, wondering where the sun has gone
Driving through New Mexico
Asking why there's no one home

Encinitas likes to miss me
Like nobody's child
And my eyes like rainy tuesdays
Like to watch you smile
Smile
Like to watch you smile
Smile

And I'm here, wondering where the sun has gone
Driving through a midwest storm
Asking why there's no one home
There's no one home
There's no one home

Don't you have an opinion of the song? :P

I don't know, it seems to me like the song is just literal. He's talking about what it would be like with a burning California. No sun, no smilies, everyone feeling physcially horrible that they can't go home or stay home. And he's just waiting for the day that the fire goes out and everyone is happy to be home and every city is happy to be lived in. There is probably some sort of message, but nothing I can see.

I have to write an analysis of a song for one of my classes and i was hoping this website would be able to help me out but no one seems to know what this song is about. all i know is that alie is his sister who likes to drink jack and coke so that's probably why her stomach's churning like a storm. idk the significance of the storm and burning imagery though.

Also, Encinitas is a small town near San Diego where the band spends most of their time or whatever so i guess since they're always away from home touring, Encinitas misses them.

that's about all i can help out with. i'm thinkin i shouldn't pick this song to analyze anymore. maybe i should just do boston. it's a lot easier to decipher the meanings of the lyrics.

A common theme in the album is leaving the previous life in California. By California "burning to the ground," implies that now they have more to look forward to. California is gone but not forgotten.

definitely about an arsonist dodgin' the fuzz.

or at least that's what i get out of it.

I think this song is about waking up to find that paradise has burned to the ground. Could be metaphorical for a girl leaving, and how paradise has left -- wondering where the sun has gone, there's no one home.

I know, I know, this comment is useless as far as diserning the meaning...but its great to listen to on the beach at sunset...watching the waves crash and hearing the cymbols do the same...
