Cigarettes Lyrics
Man, I love this rap game mainly cause it's cool
To add a little spice to the life you've been through
Everyone exaggerates a tiny little bit
Make that shit sound more gangster than it really is
You can't appear weak man, we wanna hear street
We wanna hear you spit your thug over this here beat
Don't take it as sarcastic, I can't get enough
I'm telling you, you can call my bluff, if it's not ruff
Then I don't really need it, I'm not even ashamed
I got too much reality that's filling up my brain
So sell me on that product, I'm addicted to the game
Suck it up like a cigarette, light it up man
It's just like a cigarette, it's something that I do
Once in a while but between me and you
It's just like a cigarette, nobody's really fooled
I don't want the truth I wanna feel fucking cool
Let me tell you something that I realized tonight
My hip-hop radio's like Marlboro Light
They're both selling stories and they sound about the same
Cigarettes say they're safe, rappers claim they really bang
We don't care if it's true when we lay the money down
We don't believe the words, we just love the way they sound
They're acting we're like idiots, they're lying to our face
Maybe we are idiots, we buy it anyway
I'm running out to get the next rapper's CD
Just sucking up the guns, drugs and misogyny
The same way that I suck up all the stories when I breathe
That little bit of death supposedly cancer free
And everything they say's got the truth twisted up
But twisted up's what I want, man, I can't get enough
Cause even though we know it's all just a big bluff
We just light another up, what, we don’t give a fuck
Man, listen to my words, listen for while
Lip service radio, don't touch the dial
If you're in the car, turn up the track man
Give your whole neighborhood some second hand rap, hey
Matter of fact, listen for a while
Lip service radio, don't touch the dial
If you're in the car man, turn up the track
And give your whole neighborhood some second hand rap
It's just like a cigarette, it's something that I do
Once in a while but between me and you
It's just like a cigarette, nobody's really fooled
I don't want the truth I wanna feel fucking cool
It's just like a cigarette, it's something that I do
Over and over but between me and you
It's just like a cigarette, nobody's really fooled
I don't want the truth I wanna feel fucking cool

This is the best song on the album in my opinion. Great slow, dark beat with strings and choir. The lyrical metaphor - comparing mainstream hip-hop to cigarettes - is one of the best I've heard in hip-hop. Both are selling us lies, yet we continue to consume them just to appear cool.
This song is sorta saying he's aware of the 'unrealness' of hip-hop sometimes, but that that's what people love about it, the image and the lies. I'm surprised that so many hip-hop fans have taken to this song, as it basically criticises the hip-hop culture and fans ('maybe we are idiots, we buy it anyway'). This song has some of the best lyrics on the album tough ('give your whole neighbourhood some second hand rap')
i think this songs trying to say that just cause rappers rap about certain things doesnt mean their all drug dealers, and crimanals, that people take words to literaly
Lyrically, this song is probably number one on The Rising Tied in terms of being just so well thought out. The metaphor is brilliant and the song is nice and dark as L-Kyne said.
definitely the best song on the album, my very favorite the first time that i heard it. has an awesome beat, and the lyrics are right on
brilliant lyrics, amazing music. this is my favorite song on the album. not being a fan of the hip-hop scene myself, this song really makes me smile.
Yeah...go FM
The lyrics tell so much truth that it's unreal.
And the metaphor might go deeper than some think, because with most of these gangsta rappers hip-hop and cigarettes go hand-in-hand. The Game, 50, Snoop Dogg, they all smoke. It seems like Shinoda is telling off these hip-hop people for using cigarettes and smoke to me.
this song's lyrics are amazing. It so deep, like cmill216 said the metaphor is amazing. Mike shinoda's lines are incredible.
this is for sure my favorite song by fort minor that i've heard they are saying that even though it is advertised everywhere how bad cigarettes are for you, people do it anyways just like many hip-hop songs contain lies but people listen to anyways
"we don't believe the words we just love the way they sound"
