These Living Arms Lyrics
So a crowd he gathered round us
I'm pining one last kiss
I'm struggling with this lifeline
In the shadow of this bliss
Patience my love Patience my love it'll all be alright
Ain't it funny how the fates work
I feel cheated by the turn
Still this love it hovers over us
And the lessons that we've learned
Patience my love Patience my love
With your arms around me
You're singing softly
And I fade from memory
And move on
We were lost inside a wasteland
Of fools groping for the gold
I wonder if they'll think of us
While they're still searching for their souls
Patience my love Patience my love
With your arms around me
You're singing softly
And I fade from memory
And move on
May nothing harm you
I'm still inside you
With my wings around you
So never put it out my love
The spirit is the flame that burns within
Hold on to me
And it'll all work out fine
Sleep now is descending like a dream
Still I'm shaking from the softness
Of your skin
Hold on to me love
And it'll all be alright
With your arms around me
You're singing softly
And I fade from memory
And move on
May nothing harm you
I'm still inside you
With my wings around you
With your arms around me
You're singing softly
And I fade from memory
And move on
Sweet lover go on Sweet lover go on
My love be strong
I'm pining one last kiss
I'm struggling with this lifeline
In the shadow of this bliss
Patience my love Patience my love it'll all be alright
I feel cheated by the turn
Still this love it hovers over us
And the lessons that we've learned

I've always felt this song is about a couple of lovers where the man is dying, and the woman is comforting him (he's 'pining one last kiss', and 'struggling with this lifeline', ie struggling to stay with her for a few more moments). It also might be a violent, sudden death, like a car accident or something, because a 'crowd has gathered round' them. It's also evident how he resents his life ending (feels 'cheated by this turn', ie turn of events), but is grateful for the love that they had together.
She's holding him and trying to comfort him, but he's telling her not to worry, and that everything will be fine. Note how she holds him with her arms, but he 'holds' (shields, whatever) her with his wings, as though he's an angel (hence the dying idea). There are other elements supporting the idea of the narrator dying, like 'sleep now is descending like a dream', and 'I fade from memory and move on'.
The verse about the spirit being like a flame sounds like he's telling her not to give up, a sentiment that is repeated through the song, and at the end of the song, he's telling her to be strong, and go on (ie, get on with her life, and not be sad).
I've never thought too closely about these lyrics until now, but I think you're right. Even the title 'These Living Arms' indicates that he's comforted by the life in her arms but that his life is fading. Always loved this song, even more so now, but for me its now a much sadder song. Prior to this I just thought it was about a man who drew strength from being with his woman.

Man..The Tea Party just doesn't get enough recognition..
Well..I think it's quite obvious what this song is about..two lovers that can't be together, with all odds against them, but prevail anyway...that's what I see anyway. I can relate to this song so well...I mean..the guy's voice..the words..just so amazing s.s
Anyway, I'll stop rambling. But let's give these guys more credit. :O
the tea party are basically only known in canada and australia, i don't think they've ever had an american deal.
@mayorbill11 \r\nSaw them as the support act for Dream Theater in 2000(?) in the Netherlands, and they blew me away. Bought a few albums, but never heard from them again until this year in a podcast.

I just really listened to this song for the first time today. Not sure why. We listen to Triptych/tour version constantly - family favourite... but today the words just really hit me and moved me in such a deep way. Especially: "with your arms around me you're singing softly and i fade from memories and move on may nothing harm you i'm still inside you with my wings around you you'll go on" beautiful
