Hello Skinny/Constantinople Lyrics
Skinny was born in a bathtub
And he grew so incredibly thin
Even the end of an eye dropper
Sucked him in
Skinny never knew any questions
Skinny never looked at lights
Skinny sold something
Every single night
Skinny sold a soldier toy to me
Skinny sold a wife
Skinny sold a suction cup
And a knife
Skinny found a hello dolly
Record in the hall
He sold it to a truck driver
In the fall
(Hello Dolly)
Here I come, Constantinople
Here I come, Constantinople
I am coming, Constantinople
Here I come
Here I come, Constantinople
Here I come, Constantinople
I am coming, Constantinople
Here I come
All the leaves are off of the oak and
All the sheep have followed the spoken
Word I'm coming, Constantinople
Here I come
As I stand out in the open
All my friends are with you I hope and
Pray I'm coming, constantinople
Here I come
Here I come, Constantinople
Here I come, Constantinople
I am coming Constantinople
Here I come
Here I come, Constantinople
Here I come, Constantinople
I am coming Constantinople
Here I come
Well, here I come, Constantinople
I'm coming, Constantinople
I'm coming with my head held high
Here I come, Constantinople
I'm coming
I can't wait to see you
I'm coming with my head held high
I'm not coming on my knees
I'm coming, Constantinople
Here I come, Constantinople
Here I come, Constantinople
I am coming Constantinople
Here I come
And he grew so incredibly thin
Even the end of an eye dropper
Sucked him in
Skinny never looked at lights
Skinny sold something
Every single night
Skinny sold a wife
Skinny sold a suction cup
And a knife
Record in the hall
He sold it to a truck driver
In the fall

I didn't register for this site until I read what people said about this song. I can't believe that none of these primus fans can figure out what they are talking about (at least what I feel to be blatantly obvious). Crystal Meth.
"Skinny was born in a bathtub." Much home made meth is cooked in bathtubs, therefore, that was how he was born, or how 'Skinny' was made.
"And he grew so incredibly thin, even the end of an eyedropper sucked him in." (Most) people get crazy thin if they're a meth addict
The questions and lights parts, maybe he never questioned what he was doing, and he just went with it.
About selling things, a person is likely to go broke, likely lose their job if they are a serious addict, so they are going to sell whatever they can to get a fix.
The whole Constantinople part...well, perhaps since that city is no more, he's on his way to becoming the same. Not really sure, that just seems to ride on the surface of what they may mean.
i personaly prefer the residant's original Hello Skinny, but Primus's version of COnstantinople is much better
Oh geez, another cover. I was unaware of this.
I think they really should have played Constantinople on Hallucino-Genetics, instead of just Hello Skinny.
Oh yes, and now that I've listened to them, I agree that constantinople is much better, but I'm not so sure about Hello Skinny. They're both pretty good.
I was very dissapointed that they did not play this song on the DVD also. No, I was pissed. This is one of there greater songs. Even if it is a cover. I love it.
Constantinople is about death and dying....=/ why would the residents sing about a town in turkey or some shit.
Cheap heroin is made in a bathtub and called 'bathtub heroin". This song was released in 1978, so it had to be about a well-known drug at the time, which crystal meth wasn't. Also, it was hard to get syringes then, so heroin addicts made their own with eye droppers. Heroin addicts were often skinny, and they were known for selling all their possessions to get more money to get high.
Hello Skinny seems like a song about LSD if you ask me... And he grew so incredibly thin Even the end of an eye dropper Sucked him in
Skinny never knew any questions Skinny never looked at lights
I like the meaning about meth but speed is a more accurate drug for being made in a bathtub. To me the whole part of a "suction cup and a knife" sticks out to me. This imagery suggest abortion instruments to me. Also the idea that "he grew so incredibly thin" and that skinny never knew anything and that he "never looked at lights". A fetus never has the ability to see in the womb also would never know of anything of the world. I honestly see this being about someone who survived an abortion as a fetus and stuggled to fulfill a meaningful life and commits abortions himself. I know it sounds weird but at the same time I think it has an outreaching concept about how humanity never learns from it's mistakes including what has been done to them. AS for the Constantinople part this is all about someone getting high and being addicted. He is looking forward to going to a place that doesn't exist at all at least anymore. it could be a song about delusion in life but some one who is broken by that delusion. He states "all the leaves are all off the oak" leaves are the life source of plants and with no leaves they have no means of living anymore. One could also look at it as possibly a suicidal idea. Either way it is about escaping from reality.
Fail! Nice try though..

WEll about skinny well it is weird lyrics i think its about some freaky hick u no who just sells shit anyway i deffently no whats constantinople is about it is about the turkish city in turky and the guy is just sing here i come as if he is plaining a trip there so its kool
"it's been a good life, Constantinople, but I'm ready" "I'm coming with my head held high" How could any of that be talking about a trip to a non-existent Turkish city? And furthermore, why would someone write a song about planning a trip? Does it not occur to you that your "analysis" didn't even go as far as the face value of the lyrics, let alone taking the lyrics metaphorically. I honestly hope you're five or joking, because that level of ignorance is astounding.

Now I personally believe it's about heaven. Constantinople was what...
Now I personally believe it's about heaven. Constantinople was what I considered heaven, or the afterlife as it may also be referencing. This would be because Constantinople itself is dead and gone. It may also mean God, because it is now inaccessible by any living human and, at one point in history, was an icon of strength and power, much as god is now. "All the leaves are off of the oak and All the sheep have followed the spoken Word" Both seem to symbolize death. The leaves are falling from the dead tree, and the sheep have been slaughtered (the spoken word in that scenario meaning the herder, or whoever it would be, luring them into the slaughterhouse). Though, considering sheep aren't exactly known best for their meat, it could also refer to people following religion, phrased as if a skeptic were speaking of it. "As I stand out in the open All my friends are with you I hope and Pray" I took this to be talking about his vulnerability as he lay dying, and how he hopes he may meet his loved ones in heaven. Toward the end, the spoken lyrics all seem to suggest he's accepted death's embrace and will die with honor rather than kicking and screaming. He's had a full life and knows that it must come to an end.
All this being said, I do still think megatom0 made some very valid points about the song and I do not fully reject his theory as many of the conclusions we made are shared.
