Just Like Mr Benn Lyrics
Put your sweet fingers
A little closer to the keyboard
It's hard to read between your lines
We were the clock hands at midnight
Now you're four whole hours behind
Put your sweet fingers a little closer to the keyboard
I can't quite see the whites of your eyes
Though you bat your eyelids from across the ocean
And I fall over in their breeze
I don't bring you spices from the East
I don't bring you the world's you crave
'Cos everyday you need a new one
Just like Mr Benn, just like Mr Benn
Put your sweet fingers a little closer to the keyboard
We pass light bits in the night
Though you send your flare to the horizon
I just stare and blink in your light
I don't speak in all your tongues
So I don't even know if I'll be welcome
But what if I appeared as if by magic?
Just like in Mr Benn
So go if you're going
You keep pouring when I say when
Come home when your
Work there is done
Just like Mr Benn
Put your sweet fingers
A little closer to the keyboard
It's hard to read between your lines
We were the clock hands at midnight
Now you're four whole hours behind
A little closer to the keyboard
It's hard to read between your lines
We were the clock hands at midnight
Now you're four whole hours behind
Put your sweet fingers a little closer to the keyboard
I can't quite see the whites of your eyes
Though you bat your eyelids from across the ocean
And I fall over in their breeze
I don't bring you spices from the East
I don't bring you the world's you crave
'Cos everyday you need a new one
We pass light bits in the night
Though you send your flare to the horizon
I just stare and blink in your light
I don't speak in all your tongues
So I don't even know if I'll be welcome
But what if I appeared as if by magic?
Just like in Mr Benn
You keep pouring when I say when
Come home when your
Work there is done
Just like Mr Benn
A little closer to the keyboard
It's hard to read between your lines
We were the clock hands at midnight
Now you're four whole hours behind

This song is about the difficulties involved in maintaining a long-distance relationship:
"Put your sweet fingers a little closer to the keyboard ...you bat your eyelids from across the ocean ...you send your flare to the horizon ...We pass like ships in the night"
It's obvious that he really wants the relationship to work out and would do anything to make it so but doesn't know where he stands with regard to the other person: "I don't even know if I'll be welcome". Hence the Mr. Benn reference "But what if I appeared as if by magic? Just like in Mr Benn".
Beautiful song. Great band.
Mr Benn is a kids cartoon from the 1970s in england, he used to go to a magic costume shop (&be brought to the world of whatever costume that he was wearing), have an adventure, solve a problem & return home. great guy
I used to love that cartoon. Can't believe more people havn't commented on this song. I love it
this is a fantastic simile - mr. benn being like a girlfriend who's way out of your league - genius.
it could also be read as a girlfriend whos never happy and always wants something else (another reality)...but i like the out of ur league idea better....bat your eyelids & i fall over in their breeze...fantastic.
'I don't speak in all your tongues So I don't even know if I'll be welcome But what if I appeared as if by magic?'

yeah i think this song is about a long distance relationship. they both are different people and come from different cultures and hes saying i might not be some sophisticated local lad...but that if i just turned up anywyas
It's definitely long-distance based on the lyrics. Even the image of "We were the clock hands at midnight / Now you're four whole hours behind" implies his girl moved to the US. Such a lovely song.
Im not offering any input because I think everybody's correct in saying that its about a long distance relationship with a woman in America. Instead I'm going to say what a hidden gem this song is just like Bell X1. Talk about incredible
