My First Born For A Song Lyrics
Somewhere in this sea of Club Milks
Tea and ashtrays
There is a song
I'm in the crow's nest with binoculars
Just waiting for one to come along
I've seen the flare so I know it's there
It has me tied up at a rate of knots
No navigation, global position
Just me and this midnight oil
So take me to your king
I hear he's the man to see
And I will cross his palm
My first born for a song
Somewhere in this froth
And howling wind
There's something worth singing
Climb into the attic to write me a classic
But it's not happening
It's just Christmas up here
Between the phone calls
And text messages
The air must be thick with words
But not between us
Shoulder to grindstone
Switching to manual
Keep the head down
And I'll see you at the end
So take me to your king
I hear he's the man to see
And I will cross his palm
My first born for a song
Tea and ashtrays
There is a song
I'm in the crow's nest with binoculars
Just waiting for one to come along
I've seen the flare so I know it's there
It has me tied up at a rate of knots
No navigation, global position
Just me and this midnight oil
I hear he's the man to see
And I will cross his palm
And howling wind
There's something worth singing
Climb into the attic to write me a classic
But it's not happening
It's just Christmas up here
Between the phone calls
And text messages
The air must be thick with words
But not between us
Shoulder to grindstone
Switching to manual
Keep the head down
And I'll see you at the end
I hear he's the man to see
And I will cross his palm

i think it's: And I will cross his path.
Love this song haha I want a club milk now!
Actually, I think it is "cross his palm", and, despite the song title, I think what follows is "my first born with a song." As in, this is the exchange he's making with the king, you know?
Isn't the exchange "my first-born for a song"?
Isn't the exchange "my first-born for a song"?
It's definitely 'my first born for a song' and 'cross his palm' - the story going throughout the whole song is that he has writer's block & can't seem to get a song together:
|| Somewhere in this froth || And howling wind || There's something worth singing || Climb into the attic to write me a classic || But it's not happening
Cross his palm - as in, offer him a bribe & he'll give up his first born - in other words, he'd give anything to break his drought & get a song down.
Writing a song about not being able to write a song - genius.

Noonan is a genious song writer anyway. So many funny little bits in his songs, some literature references but I love "climb into the attic to write me a classic/but its not happening, its just christmas up here".
Another eg. is in "Next to you" "a little all over the shop/like those holy souvenirs from Knock/that come all the way from China"..brilliant.
