In The Crossfire

I saw an interveiw with Starsailor and the lead singer (sorry i don't know his name) said that he was lying in bed lsitening to the radio, usualy he sorta ignores it but just this once he listened because the news was on. And there was a corresspondant talking from Iraq and in the background there were woman screaming, and this really hit him. This is where we get the lines "I hear them screaming on the radio". And then the bit with "it's getting louder, in the crossfire" obviously that's how its effecting him and what he thinks about it.

I heard the singer saying it was a song written for himself, trying to tell himself "not to think too much". Anyway, this song is awesome it is very intense and emotional at the same time.

I love the lines "I don't see myself when I look at the flag"... It would seem to fit in with the theme of the terrors of the Iraq, that he feels no pride when he sees the flag waving because of what we've done, and he thanks God that he still has that element of huanity remaining. I also love how it breaks from the five lines about love and desire, and seems to break back almost brutally into "I hear them screaming...". It's almost as if he's imagining a better world, and how we could be more peaceful, then reality snaps him back out of it.

That's what I think anyway.

that last post seems like utter bollocks to me. I think you need to be a bit less up your own ass to understand this song.

and realise that not everyone is from the usa.

the first and third posters seem to have hit the nail on the head for me. Its clearly about the shame in a flag and foreign policy of the state you belong to. In this case it would be the UK's ridiculous following of the US into breaking international law in order to invade and occupy Iraq.

I suppose it comes down to a policy carried out not in his name. What a cracking song.

The 'think god' lyric is interesting. possibly hinting that the pratagonist is grateful he is not overcome by the wave of propaganda and acceptance of the unacceptable. apathy.

Considering the flag represents the most powerful democratic and free nation on the Earth, the fact that this singer doesn't see himself when he looks at the flag is disconcerting. The flag doesn't represent war; it represents hope, freedom, and humanity. The flag is what we as a people make it. We are all citizens of this country, and flag reflects us individually when we look at it.

It seems the song writer has some self-imposed angst mixed with a misunderstanding of his nation. He feels disaffected by outside events, when the real damage exists inside of him. He could stand up to make the world a better place, instead he blindly blames his country.
