The Primer Lyrics

Prescribe me: Corrupt me
Put your guns in my hands
In the hands of the young
Let's kill
Let's die
We're all equal tonight

Prescribe me:
I don't want to feel what is happening
I don't want to know what I see
Please don't let me cope alone
Joystick revolution move me
It's all a dream
Redneck lord you still soothe me
Behind your black tie revolution
This is just a party

Prescribe me:
Become the whore
Please drug the young
Follow the gods
For sex and greed bring the smiles
The rich, sexy smiles
The smiles that blow the minds of every goddamn male pig out there
We all just want to fuck
What is love, the idea of love
Corpse play

Tradition/ marriage:
We don't have to take this serious
Have you seen the cities
Have you seen the images

We have to be you

2005 welcome to perfection
Prescribe me, indulge me
You have won.

I think this is about how the whole concept of love has become cheap and meaningless. Marriage has gone from being a sacred, once-in-a-lifetime thing to something that you can do as many times as you want without there being anything wrong with that. The entire world is bent on image, and teaches it's young that they should be too.

the new album is one of best albums i have heard in years..all the songs have something special.my favorits are all bodies, selkies(love the 7/8 part in the begining) and this one..the intro is very epic and the lyric is good.im with tallant that its about that the concept of love has turned into a freakshow that is based on image..2005 welcome to perfection kinda sums it al up i guess

Primer:

  1. A textbook formerly used in primary education to teach the alphabet and other basic concepts.
  2. (biology) A single-stranded nucleic acid molecule required for the initiation of replication of a DNA molecule.
  3. Any substance used to start a fire.
  4. A small charge that explodes when struck with force that ignites the gunpowder in ammunition.
  5. A layer of paint designed to underlay a topcoat, used to enhance the adhesion and durability of the topcoat and help in protection of the surface.
  6. A device used to circulate gasoline into the ignition chamber of an engine.

Which one?

Definitely not about sequencing the genome haha

All could fit quite well though, bar the 6th one, too!

"1. A textbook formerly used in primary education to teach the alphabet and other basic concepts."

I think that has the most relevance to the lyrical content.

I don't think that Tommy wrote these lyrics solely with what love and marriage have become, but with how the normative values of Western Civilization have have changed drastically from what they once were. It seems to me that the lyrics are from the point of view of someone who easily gives into these "new" conceptions of what societies norms have become.

The only thing I'm confused with is the Jostick revolution bit. Meh.

Just my $0.02

I think just looking at the song as a whole (instead of trying to pick apart every stanza) and understanding that "the Primer" in settler's days related all their lessons back to religion definitely explains a lot.

I think the first part with the guns in the hands of himself and the young is about everyone being able to just go out there and get "emotionally" involved with someone or just fuck whoever they like, without really caring about the other person or about what they themselves are doing. Then he says something about not wanting this to be like this. I don't get the joystick thing either, though.. Then I think that "this is just a party" is about people going to parties and making out with others. The next part might be about following the way everyone else feels on this subject and "becoming the whore" and descibing it as a vivious cycle. Then he mentions "corpse play" which is of course sex without any real feelings attached to it. Then he draws in the image of marrige and says "we don't have to take this seriously". I think it means that people think the way that "let's have fun while we're young, and then get serious about this love-thing when we grow old". Then he finishes with "2005 welcome to perfection / you have won" leaving a feeling of powerlessness and giving up on it..

I think he uses a lot of straight-edge views in this song, like having sex with someone you don't love and such...

But, ehrm... Main point: "We all just want to fuck", so what is real love and what is just physical attaction. And what is worth more and what do we want to put our money on: Love or fornication?

everyone is kinda circling around what i believe the song to be about, but the major theme is simply about the world/culture we live in today, and its ill standards and actions.

He critisiese the drug culture (it would seem more so the ones who use painkillers), the fact that our culture is based around please (especially sex), and with that pleasure based culture he talks about how the males just want to have sex, and the females just want to whore themselves for the finer things in life. He talks about how traditions such as marriage are now a joke.

and lastly he goes into an extremely sarcastic lash at our culture. i dont think that line needs much more explination.
