It's not a far commute to access the company of brighter pigments
Administer abuse, detach then release a pixilated statement
Recessive paper weights in training, school children infiltrate the branstem
Sexual organs start exchanging
It feels like I'm in a Darger painting, Henry must have been lonely

Van City's got a wide array of suspects
They're not afraid to do whatever you suggest
Seems to be no shortage of the excess
So let's dive in, let's dive in

A contraceptive verse, deceiving, so no one figures out what I mean
I'll harvest my tongue, negating lyrical parasites in waiting Zip driven amputee
Frustrated, can't seem to get a clear connection
You may have hit eject, impatient, feels like this room is going to cave in
And it could happen this instant

Submerged in an amber grave that's not how you'll calculate your worth
Don't consider it a waste, cannot keep from moving in reverse
Don't question me about the content, I'm not in the mood for explanation
So figure this out for yourself

The song translated into simpler terms from my point of view.

It's easy to get our music to reach white people. Abuse them, go away for a while, then come back with an album. They're being taught not to hold to anything. Students in the modern school system encourage and force this upon each other.

This next part is possibly a reference to homo/bisexual teens. (Sexual organs start exchanging It feels like I'm in a Darger painting, Henry must have been lonely) Henry Darger wrote stories and painted pictures of hermaphrodite children. (They were both boys and girls at the same time) "Henry must have ben lonely" He was a recluse, and Fran may be asserting that loneliness leads to homosexuality.

    On to the chorus...

Van City is slang for Vancouver, Canada. "Van City's got a wide array of suspects They're not afraid to do whatever you suggest Seems to be no shortage of the excess So let's dive in, let's dive in" Vancouver has the highest crime rate of any large Canadian city. Fran seems to be saying, like in the first verse, and in a satirical fashion, go with the flow. Let's go to Van City and commit crimes, because everyone else does. Let's hold to no beliefs, or go homosexual (No, I'm not against homosexuality), or listen to From Autumn To Ashes just because everyone else is doing it,

    Next verse...

I'm using big words so the fans can't tell what I'm saying (Nice try Fran) I'll sing about what nobody thinks I will. "Zip driven amputee, frustrated. Can't seem to get a clear connection" (Zip is another word for an ounce of marijuana) Marijuana addict frustrated because he can't understand the damn song! He may stope listening to the song, impatient with this new style. (The change in Abandon Your Friends) The cave in may be a reference to the band braking up, which was their plan until recently.

Last verse. Amber is a type of LSD (drug) If you die doing drugs, that doesn't mean you're a bad person or a good person. Don't consider your life wasted. Even if you diodn't do drugs, you would die another way. Don't ask me (Fran) what this song means. Figure it out yourself. (Which I think I just did)

Possibly a deep song, possibly I'm just overanalyzing it. Great song either way.

I really dislike the chorus of this song...and I love nearly everything else this band has done. I like the rest of the song quite a bit, the verses fucking RIP ASS!... just the whole "van city..." section is just too sing-song-ish. Bugs the crap out of me actually. Even the whole call-response thing with the corpse throated guy which I normally like sounds like crap on the chorus. And the chorus goes on too long, and it's boring. Ok, and that's the last negative thing you'll hear me say about this band. They rule otherwise.

This is a great song but it doesn't really have the feel of a From Autumn to Ashes song....but neither does their latest album. Anyway i'm not even going to try to have a crack at this song as it oculd mean anything, however Henry Darger was a painter and his work was relitively unknown until he died. His landlord discovered his work and writings depicting a story about far away planets and wars between the planets. Children seemed to play a major part in the story and his paintings.

    Well, I know what it's about 100%.

"It's about the folk art of Henry Darger, and about shamans and mind expansion. And it's also a song meant to discourage the abuse of alcohol."

That is right from the Wolf's mouth, I asked him myself.

I think theres something else about the drug use, because a few of their new songs say something about someone dying from drug use, possibly a close friend of the band?

Love in a Vacuum
'Til Tuesday
Well, in my opinion this song is about being a young & maybe a little naive &/or introverted girl and finding yourself loving a man who is at first very charming, carefree & outgoing, and seems at first to be without limits, as in "There was a time you opened up every doorway you didn't mind if everything wasn't your way" then that man starts to gradually become more introverted & shows their more possessive/obsessive side to you as the relationship progresses, even while they keep up the appearance of being carefree & outgoing to everyone else, "Don't pull away that goes against what you told me I look in your eyes I realize what you've sold me is love in a vacuum" so you confront them about the way they're acting and of course they deny it, "I think you've changed but you insist that that's not true" quite possibly they are an addict of some sort, my guess would be cocaine, &/or showing very obsessive behavior towards you (early on in the video for this song we see the man hanging a picture up, it is a very large portrait of Aimee & it is prominently displayed in his/their apartment for the duration of the song), thus their "love in a vacuum", "You look so strange, so distant that you're hardly you Now I can see how you have been acting different You say it's me but I know that it isn't it's love in a vacuum" but still you are in love with them and don't want to leave them and you know that they are truly in love with you and they don't want you to leave them either, maybe they are convinced you can save them from themself, maybe they are so broken that the possibility of an overdose &/or suicide attempt is very real and you want to get through to them that their behavior not only dangerous but it is also just pissing you off and if they don't wise up they run the risk of loosing you, as in the lines "You will be lonely if you leave me alone", so you want to save them but can't get through to them due to the addiction &/or emotional problems they have, "Love in a vacuum and that's not enough love in a vacuum You will be lonely you'll be the only one who feels this way You will be lonely if you leave me alone You will be lonely you'll be the only one who feels this way it's just not enough" you want them to understand that the love they are giving you is not enough when it is filtered through the vacuum of their drug addiction &/or emotional impairment, "You will be lonely you'll be the only one who feels this way it's just not enough and just wait you will be lonely Love in a vacuum Love in a vacuum and that's not enough Love in a vacuum". 'Love In A Vacuum' for me is a hauntingly truthful acute argument on the loneliness of obsession and almost inevitable loss of love that follows people who are broken in some way or another; the obsessives, the coke heads, the drunks, addicts or the just-plain-old emotionally broken; a razor sharp, lyrically driven, deceptively poppy, yet ultimately-depressing-in-the-best-way song. Quintessential Aimee Mann.
