my legs are shaking
as i stare into the waking
guess i always knew
you were broken on the inside
watch life passing you by
but you coudn't move
and no one stoped to ask you
if it was okay
oooh surely there had to be a way
to smile again
pale familiar faces remind me we weren't always strangers
burying a friend
remember the year we all spent laughing
feels guilty to be happy
it never should
but i didn't stop to ask you
if it was okay
ooooh surely there had to be a way
to feel okay
ooooh surely there had to be a way
to smile again
to let life in
through the closet closed
heaven from our souls
im okay surely there had to be a way okay
surely there had to be a way okay
okay
as i stare into the waking
guess i always knew
you were broken on the inside
watch life passing you by
but you coudn't move
and no one stoped to ask you
if it was okay
oooh surely there had to be a way
to smile again
pale familiar faces remind me we weren't always strangers
burying a friend
remember the year we all spent laughing
feels guilty to be happy
it never should
but i didn't stop to ask you
if it was okay
ooooh surely there had to be a way
to feel okay
ooooh surely there had to be a way
to smile again
to let life in
through the closet closed
heaven from our souls
im okay surely there had to be a way okay
surely there had to be a way okay
okay

This is one of my favorite songs on their Album. To me this song seems to be about one of the singer's Friend or ex (or something along those lines of importance). He is watching them, pretending that everything was alright "Guess i always knew / you were broken on the inside" and that the person this song is about would watch everything happen around them but weren't feeling up to doing anything to join in on life because of serve deprssion or emotional problems and no one really seemed to want to talk to the person about the issuses "watch life passing you by / but you couldn't move / and no one asked stoped to ask you / if it was ok" and when the singer couldnt take the person not doing anything to get better they Parted and became strangers to each other then reflects on the times they had together an misses the good ones and feels guilty for not doing anything to help the person out and that their parting shouldnt have happened but the singer still did not ask what was wrong. Finally, the singer looks back at ti and thinks "Surely there had to be a way / to feel okay" and for the person to be happy "Surely there had to be a way oooooo to smile again"
To me it seems like this song is about a person Travis was really close to who had depression and somehow died (suicide?). I think the person died because Travis refers to them in a past tense.
"pale familiar faces remind me we weren't always strangers"
Perhaps he was close to this person and then somehow drifted apart. This is a really sad song. And perhaps the most beautiful on the album.
to me, this song is about suicde "surely there had to be a way, to smile again'. I think he's guilty he never did anything to help this person "and nobody stopped to ask you if it was okay". i listened to this song right after my friend commited suicde and it just fit
this is a sad song, but hopeful when "oooh surely there had to be a way to smile again" despite to be in the past ("had"), i think this song is a lesson for us.
correct:
"To smile again To let life in Through the closet closed Heaven from our souls"
This song is about Derek Foster. He committed suicide near the end of 2005. Around August. He was a friend of every one in the band.
I totally meant 2004.
thefleshisweak is right. My cousin was in this band (being that its now broken up).
the first time i heard this song i got this weird feeling in my stomach and i got goose bumps. i have never had that kind of experience with a song in my life.
this song is so powerful!!
