Cold Town Lyrics

Magazines and paperbacks, the perfect rainy day
Jenny's packed the car by now and probably on her way
Rise and put the kettle on, this feeling calls for tea
Tommy get the telephone, it wouldn't be for me

Spring feels so far away when you're unforgiven
Now that Jenny's away it's a cold town to live in

Evening brings a breaking rain, the dog goes back outside
Tommy says that I should sleep in, just to past the time
Close the door and cross the room, the moonlight wanders in
Crawl in bed with her perfume, the rain begins again

This has a Springsteen feel to it. The meaning is obvious, nothing too subtle about it. Just a good story.

I agree, the meaning is quite obvious. a lovely song though.

Beautiful.

I love the imagery in this song (like most Iron & Wine songs). It's such a cliche subject matter, yet he makes it unique. He uses almost random snapshots of a breakup situation to paint a beautiful picture of sorrow.

I also love the bass line. It's one of the few early recordings to use a full band. I think most of the early songs are better suited to stand on their own with just strings and vocals, but the melody of this one lends itself to the rolling bass line and the off-beat brush taps on the snare.
