The Artist Lyrics

I know that you're an artist
You're the hardest one to deal with
Everything that you conceal is revealed on your canvas
You find all of your ugly meanings
In the things I find beautiful
Do you see the fall is coming?
Come, I'm falling into you

You perceive all of these things I'd never have known
Love, will you turn out the lights?
Cause we're already home
Home

You painted me in pastels
Colors that don't tell of any boldness
Cause that's the way you love to see me,
So delicate, so weak, so little purpose
But your eyes are drawn of charcoal
They're black, they're so cold, they're so imperfect
Cause they see a sleeping world where waking isn't worth it

You perceive all of these things I'd never have known
Love, will you turn out the lights?
Cause we're already home
Home

Can you live without your lies?
I've had enough of you tonight

All of these things I'd never have known
Love, will you turn out the lights?
Cause we're already home
Home

You perceive all of these things I'd never have known
Love, will you turn out the lights?
Cause we're already home
Home

i love this song.. my favourite from a fanatastic band.. well my interpretation of it is...

that a girl trying to get her lover to express his emotions. But it's not that he can't he just expresses them through paintings "everything that you conceieve, well it's revealed on your canvas,"

"you find all of your ugly meanings, in the things I found beautiful," suggests that he has a very cynical nature.. that criticises everything.

"You painted me in pastels, colors that don't tell of any boldness, cause that's the way you love to see me, so delicate, so weak, so little purpose." he finds her weak and naive for believing in good.

"But your eye's are drawn of charcoal, they're black, they're so cold, they're so imperfect, cause they see a sleeping world where waking isn't worth it..." He only sees the world through a negative light and doesn't want top be part of it.

"You perceive all of these things i never have known, love, will you turn out the lights, cause we're already home..."

  • she used to see the world as a such a bright place and he bought her to a realistic view of the world and now she's sick of his constant negativty pleading him to stop.

"Can you live without your lies? I've had enough of you tonight." she's sick of his negativity and just wants a break

..... sweat,.... yes well that was my interpreatation =\

I think that the guy really is an artist of some sort...being an artist myself, I was too afraid to express my love in words or physical actions, so I drew them, and showed people.

how ironic....she always think that he is the artist....perhaps she is one as well...

This has been my favorite song since I was 13, when my niece was born this was the lullaby I would sing to her. Now, 9 years later, my life's come full circle to this song. I find myself heels over head for this cynical, angry artist boy truly does wish to see me delicate and weak, so little purpose; hates when I stand my ground and fight back. So, one interpretation, the one I've always identified with, is that she is being extremely literal throughout this song and is actually involved with an artist. My other potential interpretation has been that perhaps she's both characters in this song at the same time. She has her hope and optimism and finds the world beautiful, but there's another side to her that is trying to overtake the happier one- a more cynical one who puts down her optimistic tendencies. She's the artist, and the hardest to deal with because of the dual nature fighting within herself. I'm prone to believe that it is about some artist boy she's emotionally invested in and exasperated with, it's also just interesting to toss around some other possible meanings in my head. This song is gold.

Another great song. I think it tells a story about someone who can't show his emotions.
