What amazes me is how much is really said in so few lyrics -
First stanza sums up youth and the power most youths feel as they taste their first freedoms (of sex, drugs, material possessions) and the taste of what youths believe is self control and power over their future destinations(we all know as you learn more about the world - it don't happen that way at all).
Second stanza initially talks about relationships (can be metaphor or allegory for any relationship - couples, family, friends, enemies). "You have same names but still have separate rooms" - this can be interpreted as couples/friends are so similar yet far apart, or even the human race is so similar but we distance ourselves from each other. Covering up your guts is the eveyday facade people put on to cope with life, but when you cover up your nuts (most sensitive part) is when you will react (fight or flight).
"Press any button, milk and honey flows" - tried and true statement, you may never really know what is behind how/why you may have access to any commodity, but you just care that they are there.
The world begins behind your neighbor's wall - means you know all about what might be in your head but everyone else's mind is a whole other world.
Last stanza - one person is the agressor and one is the victim - yet neither person might see it that way no matter how obvious it may appear - isn't this so much the crux of the world's problems...

Can go on about what it means to me - but ultimately these simple lyrics can mean so many different things to everyone - ironicially, that is exactly what the song is about - it seems so to the naked eye, but unless you take the time to understand your fellow man/woman - it don't really happen that way at all.
A very underrated Who song.
The message is quite simple though - being a rockstar looks pretty cool, the cars, the girls, but really no-one can see al the crap that's going on inside a guy's head while he's partying.
This song is on my top five fav. from the Who, "pandatronic" knows exactly what he's talking about. The live version is way better than the studio.
actually alot of who songs are religous. The whole album tommy was dedicated to meher baba a religeous figure in the 20th century and the song baba oreilly is named after him. the song faith in something bigger clearly depicts god. Pete became a deciple of meher baba in 68' at which period he stopped using drugs.
Read about the abandoned Who album entitled "Lifehouse" To me Naked Eye was evolved from jams during "My Generation" in 1969 to become it's own song by 1970. The lyrics describe certain aspects of the storyline for the concept album "Lifehouse" I think the lyrics are from both characters "Bobby" and "Jumbo" point of view.
"Both think we know what's right, Both Know we know whats wrong" really sums it up. especially since "Behind Blue Eyes" is Jumbo's theme where he describes how hard it is to be trying to do what you believe is right, only to have it criticized by some who disagree.
Seriously some sexy guitar goin on in this song
So sad and beautiful at once. It reminds me of those moments of spiritual clarity when you seem to just have it all figured out; you have some greater understanding of life, beauty, everything,--with a great climax in the guitar-solo--, but then, before you know it, it's slips away again, and it never really happens that way at all.
Smoke some pot find a woman and just let go...Of course life isn't that simple and only PT can explain this so elegantly with the Who giving a powehouse performance...listen to a live performance and tell me PT can't solo amongst all the other amazing things he does on a guitar and stage! One of the commenters said this was underrated. I don’t know, is it? I feel like it’s pretty rated. It gets its fair share of acclaim and attention from what I’ve seen. Maybe not from the boneheads that think pinball wizard and behind blue eyes are their best songs, but in terms of real TW fans it does. Regardless, this song is friggin awesome. Emotional and rocking, with that authentic Who sound. Undeniably a classic.
