Shangri-La Lyrics

Sitting here, waiting for,
Someone calling at my door,
Too bad,
I’m getting out of love.

What’s the use of changing things,
Wonder what tomorrow brings,
Who knows,
I’m getting out of love.

Chorus
My shangri-la has gone away,
Faded like the beatles on hey jude
She seemed to drift out on the rain
That came in somewhere softly from the blue

Clouds roll by and hide the sun,
Raindrops fall on everyone,
So sad,
I’m getting out of love.

Chorus -- repeat

this is my favorite song off "new world record". the end is just heart-breakingly desperate, as if the writer is calling out to his love amidst a storm. it moves me every time.

I completely agree barabbas, it's a shame this song never got the respect it deserved.

I recall listening to this album, and this song, one day when I was in high school. My mother wandered by, listened, and said, "I actually like this song! Who is it?"

Shangri-la being of course a mythical paradise; a good band called Grandaddy finally split up and the last song (hidden track) reprises the end of this song only with the main singer singing 'I'll never return, to Shangri-la' meaning that his dream with his band and his music is at an end.

Very sad.

@Threepwud what song is it?

I love this song. Especially the little interlude part with the piano. Just a not on the end I'm extremly certain that they are saying "I will return to Shangri-La". A bit of hope at the end of the saddness.

another Beatles' nod, and a foretelling of the next album's title.

Definitely 'will' return, as Karnitschnig says.

Nostalgic, sentimental waffling, sadness - through past, modern. Connection and depression to current. Intense beauty to take me back all the way in ascension.

Absolutely one of Jeff Lynne's most beautiful songs. Go onto youtube and watch a video of an eastern European group performing it live...gorgeous.

@mbarsky What's the title?

I always thought this song was about a guy suiciding over his dead daughter/wife. The lyricist keeps referring to his daughter/wife as his shangri-la since she is his source of youth and happiness etc. In the end, the lyricist says that he'll return to his shangri-la, which is him suiciding in order to return to his dead daughter/wife.
