Make Believe Lyrics
Waiting for their minds to fall asleep
Sneaking out the door to the park I creep
Where my machine will wait for me
Open up the doors and stumble inside
Over a sleeping world we ride
To places I don't want to see
Don't pretend you feel
It turns your words to plastic
Don't pretend that this is real
It's all make believe
Waiters on tables are selling their lies
Drowning in the pubs till the night time dies
Whispering guilt into my ear
Looking for some cheap romance
Watching the girls in sparkles dance
Tonight could be your night my dear
Don't pretend you feel
It turns your words to plastic
Don't pretend that this is real
It's all make believe
Sneaking out the door to the park I creep
Where my machine will wait for me
Open up the doors and stumble inside
Over a sleeping world we ride
To places I don't want to see
It turns your words to plastic
Don't pretend that this is real
It's all make believe
Drowning in the pubs till the night time dies
Whispering guilt into my ear
Looking for some cheap romance
Watching the girls in sparkles dance
Tonight could be your night my dear
It turns your words to plastic
Don't pretend that this is real
It's all make believe

Why does this song remind me of Alice in Wonderland? And a lot of their songs mention plastic, so the whole concept of their cd's must be based on toys. This song is probably talking about dreams and when we dream we are tricked into thinking it's all real.
They like to make their songs reminiscent of childhood things (like childhood toys, as you mentioned). The whole Alice in Wonderland connection is kinda interesting considering the rabbit sort of became their mascot because of nothingandnowhere.com. Childhood versus adulthood is a big theme in their songs, though.

Sounds to me as though it's someone who constantly sneaks away from her boring day life. She gets in her car and drives to a place even she sees as vile and ugly, to drink and watch dancers. It seems as though she finds her "cheap romance", affection for the night that means nothing. "don't pretend you feel" "don't pretend that this is real"- pretty much means that it all means nothing to her and she's asking the man she takes for the night not to try to pretend that it means something to him.
