Communion Cups and Someone's Coat Lyrics
Talk of yesterday
And she will show her brothers
Photographed in callous clothes
Say tommorow
And she'll say, "Come find me on a beach
And there will be no moon"
But say today
And she will kiss your face
And maybe forget
Talk of yesterday
Like bargain shoe strings
She will kick the car and find her friends
Say tomorrow
And then she'll describe
Some old communion cups and someone's coat
But say today
And she may look your way
And lead you home
And she will show her brothers
Photographed in callous clothes
Say tommorow
And she'll say, "Come find me on a beach
And there will be no moon"
But say today
And she will kiss your face
And maybe forget
Like bargain shoe strings
She will kick the car and find her friends
Say tomorrow
And then she'll describe
Some old communion cups and someone's coat
But say today
And she may look your way
And lead you home

This girl, this free spirit, doesn't care about the past or the future. All that matters to her is today. If you try to talk to her about the past or future, all she has is minor details that don't necessarily amount to anything. The past is all just a memory, the future just a guess. But today, well...some important stuff could happen today, couldn't it?
one of the most beautiful songs ever written.
Actually... what I gather from the song is that this girl is quite nostalgic, and all these things are important to her even though she's quite cryptic. I imagine she holds her brothers photos in her wallet, and she still hugs whoever's coat that is. She has every intention of finding people she's lost. She keeps making plans and promises, for the morrow. But if the one singing about her said come my way this day, she would in a instant and make him a new memory.
undoubtedly one of sam's most beautiful songs (there's a lot to choose from)...
but a meaning???
i can't come up with anything!!!
maybe it's better that way..........
I'm absolutely crazy about this song. As to meaning, I think it absolutely sums up the girl's character without any direct referencing.
I don't know what to say for the meaning, but I love the whole sound of it. I love how sam's voice has this calming feeling, creating a beautiful overall effect :) i have a friend who can play this song really well and it just makes me appreciate it al lthe more
This song is just describing a girl. You can take the rest of the song how you want talking about the girl.
I agree with Enough5.....I couldn't say it better.....absolutely beautiful song.....It is in Sam Beam where I have found The most beautiful music.....This is not music...It is poetry put into the rhythm of sam's guitar
I love this song. Took me a while to have an understanding of it. Like enough5 said, (but to add onto it), i think this song is almost desciribing how a girl falls in love (as well as this specific girl's character). She doesn't care too much about the past - it's old news - nor the future - it's uncertain like enough5 said. But if you talk to this girl (or any girl i guess) about "today" and feel everything you can from the current moment, she will "kiss your face and maybe forget" or "look your way and lead you home" - an obvious idea of security and happiness (home). As for the "maybe forget" part i think that has to do with the girl having a free-spiritted attitude while expressing her love. She'll show her love to you by kissing your face, but she does it so freely and effortlessly that she will maybe forget about it later when it becomes something of the past (or "of yesterday" because when things become the past, she doesn't care about them anymore). It also sort of reminds me of a quote by C.S. Lewis: “Loving...[is] done worst when we try hardest to do [it].” Maybe that's a stretch i dunno. Anyways, i love this song. It helps me remind myself to always "say today", for in reality there are only todays
I don't understand why this song is such a rare b-side, and is never played live.
Absolutely one of my favorite I&W songs.
it's on the norfolk show, sam sounds a bit constipated... he might have caught a cold or something, but still very poignant.

I asked Sam to play this at a show last year and he said he didn't remember it. Glad to know he's re-learned it!
