interesting theory Tired, but I don't know if the meaning is so...direct. To a point you have it. To me, it is saying that he is at the end of a relationship (3AM being the dawn of the relationship). Though he doesn't know why or when things went wrong he wants to understand what happened. Like in most relationships, we never see something going wrong until it already has.

I agree with this. I accept the explanation because this just happened to me too. The relationship just went down out of a sudden and the 3AM is the time when we felt like everything was perfect just before the going down. Now I just want to get back to that 3AM

I agree with you, and since something like that happened to me recently (one night i was chatting with my now ex gf, everything seemed like a normal night, till she said something wasnt allright). Before that time i thought 3 AM could be something metaphorical like some months ago, but now i see I can take it literally. Things can go wrong so suddenly and this is what this song means to me. And whatever I did to try to fix things i couldnt, that's also included in the song. I couldnt see things like the singer did, and she let them root and grow, and when things went wrong there was no chance to remove those "bad" things that tore us apart.
I love this song! It's so amazing. The meaning is pretty clear to me. 3 AM things were alright, but now something is wrong, and the speaker wants to know what it is, and is asking what they might have done wrong. They want to fix it, but it seems to me that whoever they're speaking to isn't telling them how they can.
wow i have never thought at this as beeing a sad song.in fact this is the song that i made a new girlfriend,we dance on this song,its just great.but in some point i think u are right.3Am is some sort of border between love and hate,couple and single.but in my opinion 3AM is the perfect time to make and show the love that u have for your beloved ones
